Game 1 versus West Rowan KM 1 WR 0
Morgan Childers pitched perfect game. 13 K's. Never went past ball 2 on any batter. 54 total pitches!! Unbelieveable against a GREAT hitting team in West Rowan!
For West Rowan, Burnsides pitched a one hitter. In the first inning, Morgan Childers walked with two outs, went to second on a wild pitch and Brittney Thornburg got the RBI with a hit to center field.

    Game 2 versus CB Aycock
    KM 1 Aycock 0
Morgan Childers pitched 2 hitter. 12 K's, no walks.
For Aycock, hard throwing Jenny Jackson (WCU Signee?) threw a 3 hitter. Hits for KM were Courtney Tate, Brittney Thornburg and Kristyn Funderburke.
With no score in the top of the 7th, Brittney Thornburg got a hit, then pinch runner Amber Milwood stole 2nd base by going in so hard the ball was dislodged and she was safe. Then Kristyn Funderburke got the game winning RBI into right center field.

    Game 3 versus West Rowan
(Sunday Championship) KM 4 WR 1
Morgan Childers spread 7 hits out over 7 innings. 7 K's, 1 walk
KM made 4 errors. West Rowan left 11 on base. Scored their only run in the 7th inning. Burnsides was taken out in the 3rd inning and replaced by the 3rd baseman.
All KM runs were scored in the second inning. Thornburg walked to lead off the inning, then with two outs, Jessica Yarbro walked, freshman Kristen Cogdill short-hopped the fence and scored both Thornburg and Yarbro on the double. Courtney Tate then hit a double down the left field line. Cogdill held up at third, so with 2 outs and runners at 2nd and 3rd, Casey Camp hit one back to the pitcher and Burnsides rushed a throw home instead of going to 1st for the final out. The throw was wide right and got by the catcher and two more runs scored.
Hits for KM were LaRonda McClain and Brittney Thornburg each with two hits and Morgan Childers, Kala Buchanan, Kristen Cogdill and Courtney Tate each with one hit.
Morgan Childers received the well-deserved Tournament MVP!
KM fans turned out in a big way. Thanks to all KM fans that made the 3 1/2 hour drive to Raleigh.
West Rowan only has one senior and Kings Mountain does not have any seniors!!
CONGRATULATIONS TO KINGS MOUNTAIN PLAYERS AND TO COACHES DON SWEEZY AND SUZANNE GRAYSON!!!!!

In the first game I don't remember Childers ever crossing the plate for the run!!!!!!!

In the third game I don't remember Thornburgh ever crossing the plate for the first run!!!!!

Also in the third game there was a great catch with 2 outs by the left fielder for KM, if she does not catch that they score a few runs & momentum could have switched!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way to go to ALL the girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly, the runner that scored in the first and third game was Amber Milwood, either a courtesy runner for the pitcher or a pinch runner for Thornburg. What an asset she has been all year for the Mountaineers in that capacity. The left fielder was Lauren Gaffney and she had an excellent tournament making several key catches.

I also failed to mention what a great tournament Kala Buchanan had behind the plate. I believe she threw out every baserunner that tried to steal.

It is difficult to mention every player that had a part in this championship. It surely took a total effort from everyone; players, coaches and parents all working together for one common goal. This would have never happened if everyone was not pulling in the same direction.

It sure is nice to have EVERYONE happy for the girls for an accomplishment that is so hard to come by!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the highlights of the tournament. Again, sure wish I could have been there. Kings Mountain is very supportive of their ballteam. And I sure that the whole team as well as the ones you named played a part in the overall championship. Sounds like WR and Kings could make a run at it again next year.

    KM

Great team and some wonderful young ladies as well as a fine coach. Many of these girls attended our Showcase event and had several coaches talking about their skills. West Rowan had another great year and has a fine team also. Devon Williams had a great tourney and Gina Loflin was a foot or so of hitting one out. Good pitching from both teams. Enjoy the summer ladies, I am sure we will see many of U. :ylsuper:
