Finally.... but you must understand that he was re-assigned to a regional position. Anyway..it's good that he is here. Let's treat him with TBR respect because it's better to have him here than not.

My favorite quote by Langston, " I'll check in on this board from time to time, since you guys abandoned our old board (smile)." Hehehehe!!

He has finally come to realize this is the best dang HS sports board in the State :xyzthumbs

Nah, but I've actually been re- re-assigned. I'm back to the Charlotte area primarily, though I'm no longer the primary reporter. I'll have a similar role as last year, trying to find the larger stories and issues, but will focus on Mecklenburg County.

    Larry D. what's up, man?

    Welcome aboard Lanston ....

We should be able to get some "stimulating" conversations going.

I have a question, or more of a suggestion to Langston. Seeing that the Charlotte Observer does not cover local high school sports as in depth as locals would like I would like to make a suggestion. Why not use "The Neighbor" section of the newspaper to cover Middle School and High School sports more indepth. I coached for ten years in the Hampton Roads area and they had a section called "The Beacon" for the Va. Beach area, and each week great reports were made on both high school and middle school sports for the previous week. This area does not report on any middle school sports and I think that it would boost sales just knowing that each week The Neighbor would be reporting on local sports. There were at least two reporters that all they covered were the middle school and high schools in the area and each Thursday they would have middle school scores, and a write up of several of the teams. High school coverage was on both Sunday and Thursday.

On another note and since I have your attention on this particular thread, do you have anything to add or any coverage that you can share with us with regard to the Perfect Game UNC Chapel Hill Showcase thread with regard to this past weekend that you can share with us?

Most everything was said on the other board, and also on the perfect game site. It was a week-end of many good pitchers showing their stuff, and not so much offense. The gold team seemed to have a fun time, and some good chemistry on defense going. They also had some great pitching from Kirkland, and others. It is time for a rest for a few days before going into the fall season, and I am ready!

Hey, the videogame column runs every other Thursday. There should be one this week, if I can stop playing Madden '04 long enough to play and write about something else.....

As for the Neighbors idea, we tried that once. It's a lot of work for our staff. We cover so many schools now, 106, with basically five folks. There's Denny Seitz in Rock Hill handling the Rock Hills and Northwesterns and Yorks of the world; we've got Kevin Cary in Gastonia looking after the state 3AA champs and all the Gaston and Lincoln County teams, then you've got myself Cliff Mehrtens and Brett Honeycutt left to jiggle the rest.

It's tough. I can't see us doing middle school athletics. I don't sense a lot of interest there. I also wonder if CMS will have middle school athletics soon with all the budget cuts coming and new high schools going up with coaches who have to be paid. That money has to come from somewhere.
