One program that traditionally comes to my mind is Hillside High School. Very little interest, in fact 2 years ago their baseball team did not finish the season. We, in fact received 2 forefit wins from them. This year, they had a new coach that brought enthusiasm to the program. Though thry continued to lose games, you could tell they have improved. They played with alot of heart and if they stick with it they will improve.

Southern Durham has fallen off in the last few years too. Between Hillside and Southern Durham last year they won 2 games. Both of these schools are predominately black schools and baseball is not as popular. Good players at these schools have transferred to other Durham schools because of their enrollment policy.

Seems that it has been mentioned here that the coaches have brought the sport back into being. Wonder if this in the true driving factor?

I had no idea that some schools had so little interest in baseball to not even finish the season.

    Yeah But.....

YOU SAID: When we played Hillside during that season, our guy hits a routine pop fly to left centerfield......................

Needless to say this was close to the end to their season. Pitiful I know but hilarious at the time.

BUT how did they do in the playoffs???????? (Because everybody makes the playoffs). :fryingpan:

Not when you pack it in half way through the season though. As coachevans said they were much improved last year though and i hope they continue that trend. They've actually got one kid that's an excellent player. Corey Gattis, QB on the football team, is a super athlete an outstanding outfielder/pitcher. Corey moved to Hillside a couple years ago from Southern Alamance and played for me during legion. Great kid, great parents. Wished he was in a better program, he would definitely get some looks.

    Gattis

After throwing for over 300 yards and rushing for close to 100 yards in a playoff game Gattis was at a hitting clinic the next morning working on his game. Its obvious that this kid loves the game and wants to get better. I hate to see kids like this stuck in poor baseball environments. But what I hate even more is to see kids in a great baseball environment that wont travel 10 minutes to work at getting better and they dont even play football. Good luck to this young man.

    Dear Coach,

I am a superstitous young man that certain numbers make me uncomfortable. Can you please post another reply quickly so you may move past your recorded number of posts.

    Thank you

    Corey Gattis

Corey will be in good hands this summer and fall as he will be playing for Freddy Suggs and the Anglers.
