Kannapolis Post 501 coaches get paid and players pay nothing to play. We also try to feed our players after most road games before that long drive back home. Our money is raised by a group of volunteers who have tremendous support by local businesses and we also have a very popular concession stand during legion games which we make sure is open and running 30 minutes prior to each home game,,,, and of course we depend on our gates.

However, while we are discussing such issues as this, I think its entirely APPROPRIATE to give major props to Head Coach Whitey Meadows who recently retired from coaching legion baseball in our area. Coach Meadows coached the Mooresville legion team the past 35 years and never took a dime. That, my friends, is true love for the game.

EastofRaleigh,,,,, we have used buses in the past,,,,, but the last 2 years we've used 2-3 vans for each road game. We started using vans because it was cheaper, and actually some local car dealerships and local churches have ended up donating the vans to the extent that we're only paying pennies. Again, great support by our community business leaders.

Whitey is quite a guy, a true gentleman of the game. If you want to get an ear full of baseball wisdom, sit at his side for 9 innings.

I have coached legion for 5 yrs for the Gaston Braves as an assistant and we got paid each yr. I think alot of it has to do with the legion program and how profitable it may be as to if they charge kids or not.

Pirates, I believe Braves is right, if you kid goes to Vance then he most likely will play for Post 321 Huntersville. Their home games are played at North Meck.

If there is more than one legion team in your immediate area, you may need to contact the legion teams and find out what is their "base school". Then simply determine the nearest base school to your "permanent" residence and that is your legion team.

TJ, AL rules dictate that the distance from base schools to a kid's house has to be caluculated using DeLorme, Street Atlas USA® 2006.

Life is boring...no baseball, no cigars to smoke (wife's rule). I tried to fool her by watching the Cincy Reds on the television on the back deck, but she says it has to be live & in color. Women....

My crystal ball came up short on the K boys title run. Morehead City is a fine team who got hot at the right moment. But in a long series I'll take Caldwell & Kannapolis.

Hope all is well with you. We'll keep the barbeque on the cooker until next summer!
