Some thoughts:Looks like Kannapolis being area III champion drew a tough 1st round opponent. How did Hope Mills make this field with a 9-12 record?

Let's hear some predictions before the 1st pitch. Also list some strengths or weaknesses for the teams.

Does this mean that the Area hosting the tournament only gets their Champion in the tournament (plus the host), and not both of the final two teams as in the other areas? Doesn't seem fair.

I went to the first tournament in Caldwell Co., and I thought there were nine teams in the field?

Or did Hope Mills end up as one of the two finalists? Does this make any sense?

Thanks Austin Powers. You are probably right about Cherryville resting their ace in game one. This is going to make it tough on the Snow Hill-Kannapolis winner in the second round game.

I guess Cherryville has to be the favorite, especially after such a favorable draw.Best of luck to all teams.

Halton49....Only the area champ and the host team make the field from that particular area. You are right about the 1st year that they had the tournament that two teams and the host which I thought was Hickory made the field from that area. There were 9 teams that 1st year. They changed it to only an eight team field the following year.

Last year area III hosted and got only one team and a host team for the state.Rowan County was host, but they won area III also,so them and Burlington made the state field.

thanks K-Town, you refreshed my memory and it was indeed Hickory, Caldwell, and Cherryville from Area 4 in the first state tourney. Good luck to your Kannapolis guys, and go Cherryville also!!

Halton49....After seeing the pairings I really think Cherryville has to be the favorite to win the state. They put a great team on the field it seems like evey year. Also GO 49ers....I'm looking for a major turnaround from them this season.

Coaching 101: Throw your ace in Game 1, so he will be available that much sooner for later games.

Coaching 102: Win Game 1, before you start talking about Game 2.

Look guys, it doesn't matter if Cherryville rests their ace or not. At this level, if you're planning to win the tournament (and Kannapolis is), then you must eventually beat everyone's best anyway. There's no dodging anyone. Bottomline will be which team hits the best, plays the best defense and gets the best pitching over the next 5 days. A break or 2 will be nice too. Cherryville may have gotten a nice draw to start, but Kannapolis is awful deep on the mound and they will have a pretty nice pitcher starting Game 2 also. Look for Eastern Randolph and Pineville to be a factor in this tournament also.

Sorry to slight the eastern teams, but I think the state champ will be a western team again this year (Rowan-2002).
