thought I would throw out this interesting tid bit. In men's college hoops just this week a top 5 prospect committed to the University of Kentucky. In doing so he is NOT signing a letter of intent... his reason being it needlessly binds him to the institution and brings nothing to the table that works to his benefit. In other words it just locks him in and the university is still willing to give him an athletic scholarship. UK is taking the player on this basis.

I have never heard of this happening on the softball side or any other non revenue sport for that matter.

Anyone think if your DD threw it 70 you could get the same deal?

she deserves it if she throws 70, you just set the bar....

She will go to a program that doesn't think they are a non revenue sport...
    even if they are...

what about the other 999,999 players?

.....1. what age is the kid? top 5 prospect as a junior, soph., what?
    2. You are right counselor that a verbal is not binding, but it doesn't lock in or out either party. Maybe other schools that might have had a hairs chance of getting the kid will fall to the way side but I'll bet even with the committment, the other 1 or 2 bigtime schools will continue to have some "show of interest" in him, and he'll know it over and over until he signs.
    3. Why would a non revenue sport that carries interest like baseball or softball not have similar type recruiting gigs? I believe both of these sports get many committments early . JMO
    4. If a kid can throw 70, she'll get a deal for sure.

Lets take a slight change of direction . What if a player verbally comits as a sophmore ( no letter of intent signed of course not a junior yet), and backs out .I know its just what it is (verbal), but that would surely be frowned upon by colleges as no no, but what are the consequences? Any input?

PS . Not referring to my daughter. Believe me when and if that time comes there won't be any backing out on the commitment.

...well, the consequences of backing out of a verbal commitment to take an offer somewhere else would be next to nothing for the player but if the coach/school renigs on their end, then the word would spread like wildfire, and would speak volumes of such a coach to future recruits.

there are those here that are much better qualiified to discuss verbals and backing out etc but JMHO I think it is has become much more of a free market anything goes out there. As has been posted on here several times recently there are many more non renewals on scholarships coming down the pike than before and this goes hand in hand with what we are discussing.

    With Bigtime Respect

....to my friend BSportsDaddio, give me some info on this non-renewal of schollies.
Isn't there a format of graduation rates that affect future schollies?
I'm pretty sure that losing kids to grades or the kids not being happy, or playing time issues add upto a program getting docked schollie wise from the NCAA.
Why would a coach add to that misery by crapcanning a kids renewal of her $?

I agree with you my friend that its a free market and as a parent I'd use that to the best advantage for my kid regardless of what other coaches that did not sign her think.

As for the coaches, they have WAY more to lose by going back on their word on commitments and non renewals to their players IMO.

(Props to a very smart kid that you and I know and the Marlins wish her the best).....ooooops sidebar.

Fish: TY... Perhaps it is the information age but it seems we hear more about non renewals than we used to. Duke & Braves have addressed this before and while I dont mean to say that there is some big renewal inquisition each and every year the incidence of kids non getting their schollies renewed seems to be on the rise. IMHO its like a lot of things its about a money trail and when cash is tight things occur which otherwise would not in better circumstances.

I am aware on the baseball side of some particular examples during coaching changes where whole teams have not been renewed.

Rodney said it simply and best: "go where the love is". I think this can go a long way toward avoiding renewal issues as well as many others for that matter.

    Question about Recruiting

What if a college coach sent a letter to a player and said quote " we would like to further explore the possiblity of you joining our program" signed by the head coach. Does this mean she is a recruit and they need more information about her? Schedules ,etc.? or is this a generic letter.
