kanwj, I was curious about the unc facility so I went on mapquest and using the topo view I located the softball field. It's near the intersection of the 15-501 bypass and Raleigh rd. It looks pretty new to me, and very nice.

    unc facility

The softball field at UNC was built in 2002 I think. It is a great stadium to watch a game. I believe it will seat about 500 and has batting cages along the right field line. There is also a building that houses locker rooms and training rooms and coaches offices. There are plans to add an indoor facility in the near future.

They have an additional full size field just behind their main field.

And a great coach, I might add!! As does State!!

    correct!

You are correct 'Phreak, I had forgotten about the field that sits up on the hill. And you are right about the coach and her staff. NCSU also has a great staff, especially with the addition of the new Asst. coach. He has a tremendous background and a National Championship ring to go with it!!

    Back on topic...

Folks, the intent of my thread had nothing to do with alternative lifestyles or any other type of moral discussions. (Kanwj stated his/her opinion....and shouldn't be raked over the coals for it.....this is a forum for opinions, right?)

What I can't understand is, repeatedly, people on this thread have spoken about "Title 9" and "money" as the 2 main reasons why a lot of the major schools in the southeast don't have softball programs.

    Here are two thoughts:
1.) Please convince me that Duke, Wake Forest, Davidson, Clemson, etc. don't have money......and lots of it!! (can't wait to hear this one)
2.) I may be very wrong, but I thought Title 9 would actually help to ensure that if there was baseball, then there would most likely be softball. If there is boys basketball, then girls basketball should exist, also....etc.

Am I missing something? WndMlleR.....any thoughts from a college coach's perspective? Why wouldn't major colleges WANT to field a softball team, for no other reason than to represent as many sports as they can in order to flaunt an "all-encompassing" athletic department to their peer competitors?

I believe his name is Jim Baitia (spelling ?) He came from Arizona State, but started the program at Tennessee in '95 and has been at Oklahoma.

It's Beitia but your spelling gave me enough to google it. He's got quite a bio! All I can say is WOW! How did Lisa manage that? Things are looking good for State!

Yes, quite impressive !! Morgan Barbour absolutely loves him as a hitting coach. Nothing but good things to say about him.

Duke, Wake maybe Davidson not having softball I would have originally thought were due to elitism, however much of the Ivy league has softball. I was really shocked when I found out that Clemson did not have this sport. I thought it would be a natural for softball there. It makes you question if Title 9 works equally there.
