    ECU Coach Randy Mazey was suspended with pay yesterday. Billy Godwin was named interim head coach for the remainder of the '05-'06 season. Terry Holland said they would conduct a national search for a replacement. Surprised this didn't happen sooner.

    This was reported on WRAL-TV last night. Former Louisburg College Head Coach Billy Godwin is the interim head coach. Does anybody know the reasoning behing the suspension at this particular date?

    There is going to be a lot of "guessing" going on, but this one is hard to figure out on the surface.

    Over on "bonesville.net", (un-official ECU site), they had the following article that I'll pull a quote out of:

    Interestingly enough, this is the 3rd departure under AD Holland since he arrived last October.

    ... there is a lot of "smoke" coming out of the athletics department over at ECU right now. Hopefully, there isn't any underlying fire.

    I could add speculation, hearsay, and maybe some facts to this, but it would be inappropriate. Suffice it to say that if they keep Billy Godwin as head coach, I think they will have hit a home run. This guy has been very successful in all his endeavors, including a stint as headmaster of a private school in eastern NC. I'd be willing to bet that the make-up of the ECU roster will change quite a bit if Godwin is allowed to remain as head coach.

    Heard some good things about Coach Godwin. However, to name him the interim coach for one year and begin a new search could do tons of damage to the program. Hope that doesn't happen, but nobody likes uncertainty. I guess Terry Holland knows what he is doing....

    What is it about Coach Godwin that would change the make-up of the ECU roster?

    Omaha is the goal.

    With a goal of Omaha , ECU or any other Div. 1 university will not necessarily favor stockpiling a bunch of NC kids on the team.
