How has media coverage been in your areas for high school ball or local college? News Paper or local TV coverage. Wake county is pretty much non-existant. Anyone care to comment?

interesting!!!! from what i hear, our area is about like eveywhere else.....there are schools that are written about and schools that are ignored. i've seen articles about the "popular" schools in our conference when the team being written about was in the cellar and the team on top totally ignored. however, if you go back seven or eight years ago, things werent written about girls softball period in our area, so things have come a little way to getting better. I've noticed that in the last two years, our local sports reporter has been spending more time on the field and trying to get a hand on actually seeing who is who and who's doing what. but in researching this, we seem to be limited to two articles per year for our conference unless someone is making it deep into state - i'm not counting the bi-weekly scores given in the sports section with the little blurbs - actual articles about someone or some team.....the reporting of girls sports still needs to get on a somewhat equal level with the boys. someday........

    total agreement.....

...... with your reply. We made it to Walnut Creek in '04. Had a couple of pretty good articles written, but the coverage still needs to be brought way up. Being in the Raleigh area, We have a D1 and 2 D111's. Barely a box score for any of them.

    Well let's all be honest...

The fact that we are discussing a girl's sport, gives away how much media coverage it gets, or it should! Cheeze hit the nail on the head when he said certain programs get attention and the others are ignored! As well as certain players get attention and all others are ignored! But yet we watch the local news at night and hear every single score of every single football game, baseball, boys basketball games, etc...
I wonder why that is???? I wonder how many years I will have to, or would have had to, live to see that change? Yes there have been tiny, itty bitty changes! I mean since I was a girl playing softball around here! That has been a FEW years back, so there probably should have been a FEW more changes by now!
Isn't there a woman in charge of any TV stations or newspapers that could make some big changes? Isn't there a father in charge out there, that could put some changes into affect? What has to happen in this world for us to see an equal opportunity for the sexes? I mean we here constantly about race issues, but there are just as many discrimination issues for the sexes as there are the races!
If I am gonna listen to every baseball score, then I expect to hear every softball score! I will even say that all sports should be included, if one sport is included, they all should have their spot, both boys and girls! Equal time and coverage! A lot of the local TV news stations have awards such as : "The Grid Iron Great Award" for footballs players in the area. What about an award such as: "The Queen of the Diamond"? Why not cover boys sports one night and girls the next?
Or can the powers that be not come up with an idea so forward and FAIR?

    Idea

There is power in numbers! Why not have one of our talented writers put together a nice letter suggesting that there be equal coverage for all girls sports and provide to all the many readers of TBR. All of us could then send a letter to all the major newspapers and TV news stations making them aware that we do care about equal coverage and are demanding same. All the complaining in the world gets U no where without action.
Now we have to make sure that the various schools report scores, give the paper write ups, and also push to have reporters at least at the big rival games. Hey I know remember I was dreaming about a Dream Team, what can U expect from me! Run with it softball4ever!:detective::fan_wave2:

Sorry thought of something else, get the paper to print a couple of Cheese's interviews concerning softball! those were great and would be interesting to softball fans and parents of young softball hopefuls!

Great comments here. Looks like everyone gets next to nothing. The Raleigh paper does a pre-season feature on teams and players to watch for spring sports but it's nothing like it should be. I would really like to see the sports talk radio people do something about softball in the area....

And by the way, I too am awaiting Marlins post on this subject, Maybe wndmllr also.

I have a feeling when we have our new TBRPreps site up and running, many of you will be amazed at the coverage we will be giving NC FP softball. I don't want to give too much away yet, but I have a strong feeling everybody will be pleased.

It will never be enough coverage, but it will be the best you will find in this state.
