While we are on the subject of media coverage-I have found a great website that lists the websites of NC newspapers online as well as TV and college newspaper websites. It is a good way to keep up with news around the state.

I hate it when people think the media owes them something.

The media owes "us" nothing but owe the girls that play the game the same coverage as other sports when at all possible. That said, if we do not purchase papers or watch TV the media is out of work, right? They are in the service industry which means they provide what the public desires or their profits could suffer. Sad everything becomes about money. :thud:

Hillbilly. I seem to gather that you work for the media in some way. which would it be TV, radio or newspaper? Because Id like to make sure (if you would care to share your companys name) we owe each other nothing by my not subscribing, watching or listening to your employers product.

    Ray,
You are correct in the assumption I am a member of the media. I currently am a news photographer at News 14 Carolina. Therefore, I have nothing to do with what sports are covered on our air. As my colleague Solarte explained earlier, we have to do what appeals to the masses, and the majority of prep sports do not appeal to the masses. That is my opinion, and more importantly, it's the truth. It certainly does appeal to players and their parents, but that isn't enough for a big time newspaper or television station to cover the sport as heavily as they would. It really is a shame that it all comes down to money like L Blues said, but that is also the truth.

I speak on this with a very deep knowledge of covering high school sports. I covered high school sports almost exclusively at the now defunct Adelphia Channel 4 in Mooresville for nearly 3 years. This time of the year, I'd drive to Moor Park to shoot Mooresville's softball game, head to Statesville to shoot their baseball game, then I'd drive to Hickory or Charlotte for a playoff basketball game that night. I know what it means to cover high schools well, and it's easy to do if their is a budget to do it, and you can make money doing it. I absolutely wish Charlotte had a big outlet for high school sports, somebody who could devote all of their time to covering it well. It could probably make some money if done correctly, but for the average television station, we can't do it.

Ray, I wasn't trying to snap at anyone in particular, I just get mad when people think they know more about my job than I do. I don't know what business you're in, but chances are I've never been in it, and wouldn't tell you how to do it.

    Very sincerely,
    Your fellow Mint Hill Resident
    Adam Butler

Thanks for the education. I do understand more now then I did a few days ago, I never expected or even considered TV coverage of any sort.
I would however still like to see better coverage in the papers. I think that is needed and also possible and like you said even profitable to do.
You would have no trouble with my current position in life, Im retired :woohoo: and Vol. as a coach.

Ray, I will have to say that when Adam was at Ch. 4 in Mooresville he did a very good job covering HS sports. I had dealings with Adam several times about covering local sports including South Iredell HS and our Fastpitch traveling teams of the Carolina Comets. Many times he came to the ballfield alone and done the video and have it on air at their newscast. We appreciate all the TV coverage that we can get, but we really need a newspaper that can give our girls the coverage I think they deserve. I am glad to hear that Adam is still in the media and think if he had the responsibility and resorces he certainly would cover our softball.

The point is LOCAL Newspaper, most of us are not even talking about tv news...and local newspapers are NOT "big time"...they may try to be, but they're not. And in trying to be, they lose subscribers.

Rassle, I hate to say it, but the Observer is a big time newspaper. I don't claim to know much about newspapers, I'm guessing they don't cover more high school simply because they can't afford to.

Ray, I look forward to retirement, and since you've been there, I'd love some tips.

Comet, I appreciate the kind words. I enjoyed my time up there and I miss the nice folks I worked with every day. Please tell everyone I said hello.

Yes I'll agree a little bit about the observer on that one...but I'm talking more along the lines of small town local papers QCH.
