That is a good point but no one ever remember's a base coach getting killed then it happen's once and they make every coach wear a helmet. With today's society all it takes it once even though it has once or twice happened in the past 200 years and people think you must change everything.

Dear god I could only imagine. Throwing a pitch and your mom yelling "get behind the net baby so you don't get hurt."

    How about good coaching?

L-screens, wiffle balls, reduced impact and reduced flight baseballs, all are good ideas. But that takes away from the game.

How about just good coaching? How about coaching clinics to teach us rookies how to teach these kids? That would help IMO.

Teach the kids about the counts and what the batter might be thinking.

However I still think wood bats are the way to go.

    What about bamboo?

We can't take away the chinese only defense plan now can we?

You could teach kids the right mechanics and everything but eventually it will happen and they will catch it or hit them so all the training in the world can't prevent that.

I think we all agree that this is tragic however it could have happened with a wood bat. Instead of switching bats, has anyone ever thought of wearing a chest protecter? They make one for pitchers just for this.

They are great. I knew of kids that wore them and they were in the field. They fit like a vest and also protect the kidneys. But, we also need to address the injuries suffered to the face. The minor league coach was struck in the neck. I know we cannot send players out on the field in body armour. So, bats and balls are the next step. One for you Putt. How about a poly/plastic bat? Up your alley.

There is a "world" of difference between a blue dot softball and a red dot. The blue dot is a restricted flight, the red dot is a bullet to the pitcher or third baseman. No difference in feel or weight. Played one year in our league with the red dot ball. Pitchers were in a dead run backward after the ball left their hand to the catcher. Baseballs could be made the same way for high school play.
