After 20 years of covering a generation of Cabarrus County & South Rowan football teams, the Bell Game will be the last MetroChannel 7 Game of the Week. The higher ups at Time Warner have decided to pull the plug on the most popular program offered.

For Football Fans in our area, the Game of the Week has been a fall fixture. From short trips to Mooresville, to the mountains at Franklin, to the State Championships in Chapel Hill, the Doug Holmes and the MetroSports crew travelled to bring the HS fans of our community our kids living out their dreams under the Friday night lights.

In light of the Pillowtex closing, Time Warner's decision to cancel the Game of the may seem trivial but it seems like our community just keeps taking hits both big and small. If you are unhappy with this development, please make your voice heard. Contact your County Commissioners who control Time Warner's Franchise agreement and monopoly in our community. Or you can contact the person responsible for Community Affairs for Time Warner Cable in our area:

    Sue Breckenridge
    Vice President of Community Affairs
    Time Warner Cable
    316 E. Morehead St.
    Charlotte, NC

If you get the chance, though, say thank you to the folks who love doing the games and make each show happen. Say thanks to the folks in the production truck, running the cameras and don't forget Randy Whitley and Woody Cain who have given so much to the commmunity with their efforts in the booth.

Most of all, thank Doug Holmes, who's had the unenviable task of trying to keep fans happy for the last 15 years. Ironically, the week of the final game, Doug will be receiving an award from the NCHSAA for his contributions to HS sports in our district.

This is a shame, Doug and all the guys do a great job. You've got to wonder why the beancounters never wanted to sell this game of the week so the cost would not be an issue now. Their games were much better than the stuff on the educational and government channels, which is mostly just text. It just gives people more reason to consider going with the dish.

Hopefully something will come along in the near future for you guys. With the football rich tradition in your area it should'nt take long. Those televised games are the only chance some kids will ever get to see themselves play on TV. Good luck.
