Let's do what we can to get these kids some attention. They work as hard as anybody.

I see the Golden Lion pipeline is loaded...they got middle school kids bigger than a good number of McDowell High varsity team.

Crest Middle School increased their winning streak to 17 games with a victory on Wednesday over Burns. Behind a strong rushing attack, the Dragons won the season opener, 27-0.

Next: The Dragons (1-0) travel to Kings Mountain (0-1) next Wednesday. Burns Middle (0-1) faces North Lincoln in their home opener next week.

First half: Crest got on the board early after Jamall Morris’ 16-yard run. Three minutes later, Rhaheim Ledbetter posted a touchdown run of 25 yards, and Quortez Wright punched in the two-point conversion to make it 14-0 at the end of the first.

After Burns’ impressive 50-yard drive deep into Crest territory, a fumbled snap gave the ball back to the Dragons. The Eagles defense stepped up to keep Crest scoreless the rest of the half.

Second half: The Burns defense continued its improved play in the third quarter, not allowing a Dragon first down. But the Eagles’ offense was not able to capitalize.

The Dragons improved their lead in the fourth quarter. Wright had a 28 yard touchdown run with Hunter Poole drilling in the extra point. On the next Crest drive, Michael Smith carried the ball for a 14-yard touchdown — bringing the final score to 27-0.

Stats: Crest carried the ball 24 times for a total of 206 yards. Wright led the way with 102 yards and also finished with five tackles. Jonathan Bullard also collected five tackles for the Dragons.

Burns was led on the ground by Darius Ramsey with 51 yards. Elijah Brown and Brandon Littlejohn both notched four tackles for the Eagles.

From the coaches: “We made some mistakes and didn’t play as physical as I would like. Crest is a good, well coached team. For us, it is back to the drawing board.” Burns Middle coach Sam Homesley said.

“With nine new starters on offense and eight on defense, we are very young. I am pleased with the effort and the potential is there.” Crest Middle coach Robert Melton said.
