I was at the game. You may be able to call the Crest RB's the stable over the next few years. Man they have them on the way. Burns was much improved on the defensive side of the ball. Once the get these kids on defense with the offense they had last year...Burns could be pretty good at the varsity level.

One of the reasons people around sports say that competition makes you better is because it does.

When a player on a team knows he’s got to battle everyday in practice to keep a job, the level of proficiency usually goes up.

That’s part of the reason for Shelby Middle School’s 2-0 start to the 2007 football season. An abundance of running backs sharing the load is a key element for the Blue Devils and it was evident in a 26-0 win against the Kings Mountain Patriot Wednesday afternoon at Pearley Allen Field.

Records: Shelby 2-0, Kings Mountain 0-1

Next: The Patriots play another county rival next Wednesday when they host Crest. Shelby travels to R-S Middle.

On the ground: Shelby’s relentless ground game produced four touchdowns.

Kipton Kee had a pair of short scoring runs with Wesley Norris and Delonte Leach also finding the end zone. Carlos Wray also turned in a solid rushing effort.

From the coach: “We’re rotating three fullbacks and five halfbacks,” Blue Devil coach Tommy Wease said, “trying to keep them fresh. Our backs have been running hard every day. I thought our line played well too.”

Swift kick: In a rarity for a middle school contest, Manning Burton came on and kicked both extra points he attempted through the uprights for the Blue Devils.

Defensive: Shelby had its second straight shutout as it successfully halted Kings Mountain’s constant attempts to get to the outside with sweeps. Wray, Michael Knight and Calvin Card led the Devil defenders.

The Patriots’ biggest scoring chance came just before the half in Shelby territory. Kings Mountain receiver Justus Watkins was open deep but Cameron Pittman’s pass was slightly overthrown.

From the coach II: “We were swarming to the ball,” Wease said of his defense. “We’re not where we want to be yet but we came out and played hard.”
