This is my daughters first year of school ball and I have a couple of questions. First, what rules do they play under? Secondly, the local rec league has approached the team and wants them to play together as a rec league team. Is this leagal under middle school rules? Thanks in advance for all the info. I am so lucky to have found this board. I have already learned alot.

I coach middle school ball in western NC. Middle school rules are not as strict as high school rules. I have seen entire middle school teams play in travel tournaments with their coach present. I don't believe rec ball will be a problem whatsoever. There are also no rules "that I know of" about dead periods or anything of that nature. Some teams do offseason workouts in the summer, play as travel or rec, or whatever to make the girls better. The main thing to remember in middle school is that your only goal is to make the players better. Except in very rare instances, no colleges are looking at 12-13 year olds anyway--In middle school there are no state playoffs or state championship. Its all about local pride, and preparation for high school.

Public middle schools generally follow the high school rule book with variations adopted by the local conference/school system. Some play in the spring and others play in the fall. There are rules set by the state, one being that middle school players are not allowed to participate in any organized high school practice or work out. Many high school and middle school programs work together, but practices and workouts must done separately.

I'm not sure how private schools fit into this. I'm sure other posters can add more details.
