Milligan College Softball

    MILLIGAN COLLEGE, The Milligan Lady Buffs softball team opened the 2004 Appalachian Athletic Conference season with a sweep of Montreat (N.C.) College by the scores of 8-3 and 8-0. Milligan moves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the AAC

    In the first game, Milligan jumped out to an early two run lead with a RBI single from junior first baseman Brooke Davis to score senior shortstop Shelby Banion, followed by Ashley Mashburn's sacrifice fly to score Leah Fritts.

    The Lady Buffs would add five more runs in the fourth inning as sophomore right fielder Rebecca Gilley led off the inning with a walk, followed by back to back infield hits from freshmen Megan Aldridge and Amanda Verner. Back to back singles from Banion and freshman Sarah Smith scored Gilley and Aldridge respectively. Fritts would score Banion and Smith with a base hit.


    Leading the way for Milligan in the first game, were Banion and Davis who both went 3-4. Banion scored two runs while Davis had two RBIs along with two doubles. Aldridge went 2-3 with one run scored.

    Waddle picks up the victory to improve to 1-1 on the season. She pitched 6 1/3 innings, one unearned run allowed, ten strikeouts and no walks. Milligan had 11 hits.


    In the second game, pitcher Traci Harrison was untouchable. The junior for the Lady Buffs pitched a five inning no hitter. Harrison also struck out eight with no walks.

    Milligan posted five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Lady Buffs batted around. Davis led off the inning with a single followed by Fritts sacrifice bunt to move Davis to second base. Aldridge reached base on an error by Montreat's second baseman Aimee Thomas which scored Davis . Senior left fielder Ellen Stoots joined in the hit parade with a single to be followed by an Ally Horner base hit to score Aldridge. Harrison added a base hit to bring Stoots to score. Banion would fly out to the center fielder but Horner would tag up and score. Gilley added the last hit of the inning with an RBI single to score Harrison.

    Leading hitters for the Lady Buffs in the second game includes Davis as she was 3-3 and scored two runs. Horner and Harrison each went 2-2 and scored a run.
