    Glory days!

Ever notice that when a kid, who is not really a "power" hitter, gets a rare homerun that he becomes the easiest out in the lineup? For at least his next few at bats, if not his next few games, he tries to come out of his shoes with every swing, usually with ugly results!

    I'm looking for answers

How strong an arm does the catcher have?
How does the opposing team look taking infield before the game?
What kind of lead do the baserunners take off 1st?
How strong a pick-off move does the opposing pitcher have?
When a player makes an obvious mistake, how does the coach approach it in the dugout?
Does the pitcher attack each batter the same, or mix it up?
Is the pitcher going deep in the count with every batter?
When a batter doesn't get a hit, how does he behave going back to the dugout?
    3rd base coach signals?

    There are several things I

focus on when I am watching a game that "others" might not be watching.

I always look to see if the left fielder is hustling and backing up throws to the leftside or is he watching the game?
I look to see if the right fielder is hustling and backing up throws or is he watching the game?
Do the outfielders back each other up?
Do they break on a ground ball to the infeilder or do they wait to see if he has fielded it before they break?
Are the infielders creeping before the pitch , are they getting ready to make a play before the pitch?
Does the batter get out of the box on a 3rd strike in the dirt?
Does the batter run everything out hard?
Does he run a 4.2 to first base early in the game and a 5.2 when he is down big late?
If he strikes out does he go back to the dugout and pout or does he pull for the guy up at the plate?
If he hits a jack does he go back to the dugout and just sit down or does he get up on the fence and pull for the guy up?
Does the catcher block everything regardless of the situation?
Does the catcher only block when runners are on base?
Does he have the same sense of urgency to block regardless of the situation?
Do the infielders attack the baseball and play through the ball or do they sit on the baseball?
If a kid makes an error does he look like he wants the next ball hit to him , or does he look like he doesnt?
Does a kid spend half his time when in the dugout looking up in the stands
looking to see who is at the game?
Does the pitcher compete when he is stuggling or his team is struggling behind him?
    Does he attack hitters?
Does a kid ask mom or dad to get him something from the concession stand?
Do the guys get on and off the field?
Do they walk on and off the field?
Does a kid look like he is having fun and there is no where else he would rather be?
Does a kid look like he is not having fun and there are other places he would rather be?
Does a player play a step ahead of the game or does he play at the flow of the game?

There are many many more things outside of talent I always look for and watch during a game. I am sure many others do the same thing.

    what I see

who is the first guy on and off the field?

does a team who is up in the bottom of the 7th take the field expecting to win OR hoping to hold on?

Does a hitters swing stay on plane or is it in and out of the zone?
    Front side closed or open?

Finally, Friday nights game. Hitter checks swing at strike 3. ball in dirt, catcher picks clean off hop. Catcher appeals call to field--strike. Catcher throws ball around starting at first base. Hitter goes down the line, gets within 10 feet of the bag. STOPS!! Walks toward dugout. whole time everyone is getting ready for the next hitter, except for the HP Ump. He calmly waits until hitter walks in dugout and quietly pumps his fist to indicate the out. 95% of the people in the stands missed the whole thing. 100% of the players on the field did. Coach of team in field waits until after the call is made to mention it to the catcher (perfect as he did not call attention to it until too late).

What kind of game was this?

Saturday, saw a kid round second and then have to hustle back to first after center fielder makes a great catch at the fence.

The base runner did not retouch second on his way back to first but apparently the defense missed something.
