Ron Polk is Mississippi State baseball. If his word doesn't mean anything to the new AD, the AD should be fired. I love that guy. There is no PC about him. He shoots straight and tells it like it is. When he feels he is right, he will defend his belief 'til the end.

Think of him as the Bear Bryant of baseball. His word is golden.

    ???....

...wow! I'm not trying to stir up the bulldogs nest here, but, 1. If Ron Polk is the retiring AD, Coach, $ man, or chemistry prof. ....then he should leave on good terms. ...otherwise, stay in place until his $$$$$ makes him who he thinks he is. I don't know the guy, obviously he's hell bent and determined to be in control after he leaves his post. .......JMO....Fhim and anyone else who thinks that because they made a name for themselves, or the program, they deserve some sort of grant to dictate the future of a program. Dean Smith has the authority, as best I know to have a genuine influence on a program after he left. There MUST be way more to this gig than what we're hearing.

He is the Dean Smith of the Miss St baseball program. Hall of Famer and living legend. He deserves anything he wants. Probably placed more players into Major League baseball than any coach not named Dideaux. He put the school on the map athletically.

I know this, if Dean Smith recommended his assistant and a new AD blew him off, I doubt very seriously the AD would be around much longer. What basketball is to UNC--Baseball is to Miss St. Those fans are passionate, but they are nuts about their baseball team. For those that ever had an opportunity to play there, you know what I mean. The fans come early and tailgate, they throw chicken bones at the opposing players and flash their lights in the parking lot (it's raised in the outfield) at opposing hitters.

Ron Polk is god-like there. Heck, they named the field after him.

    Lot of History here

    Word Braves...

Couldn't have set it better. Polk has not only done a lot for Miss. State. He's done twice as much for college baseball in general. There's too much history on Ron Polk to say that he cannot speak his mind.

    "he deserves anything he wants"......

.....Braves, i know you've got your head and heart in the right place. It shows over and over in your vast knowledge of sports and your committment to this forumn. With all due respect to you, I ask, is Ron Polk bigger than the administration/chain of command at MSU? Do you really think that by virtue of winning games and building a program ( non-revenue) he "deserves" to run the athletic future of MSU? This guy must be very special, and I don't doubt that at all, but he should get one vote in the process of choosing a new AD or coach. I'd be ignorant if I thought that Polk, Dean...etc. don't have more clout than just one vote, they do, ....and after playing devils advocate on this, I think that someone who has nurtured athletics such as Dean/Polk, they should have a huge voice in the future of the schools athletic programs. I just don't understand where the gears busted in the engine that Polk got running to cause him to go off.

He was the AD of Miss St baseball. He promised his assistant coach the position on his retiring this year (one of the conditions for his retiring). The new AD is trying to make a statement that he runs everything involving sports, so whatever Coach Polk said doesn't matter. He makes the decision. Obviously, it has left a sour taste in the mouth for Polk and has embarrassed him as well.

AD's are a dime a dozen. To have a Hall of Fame coach affiliated with your university is much more unique. Coach Polk deserves much more respect for the program he built than what the "new' AD is giving him.

    Stay tuned...this should get interesting:sign0113:

    ?

the coach the "new" AD is bringing in is a former Miss St player that I assume played for Polk.

I always thought we've been taught that no coach / administrator is larger than the program.

Whenever a new basketball coach is selected at UCLA, John Wooden is still consulted and I suspect his advice is taken.

    Dean Smith- same thing
Coach K (when he retires)- I suspect same thing
Ron Frazier- Ex-Miami coach- same thing

I could go on and on, but when a successful coach retires, he always has his successor selected...and in this case, Coach Polk thought he did as well. You guys are pointing your responses in the wrong direction, so let's see if I can change your opinion. It's not about being "bigger than the game", it's about respect.

Coach Polk decided he was going to retire. He selected his successor to replace him ( a courtesy extended to ALL successful coaches that retire) and told everyone involved, including the person that eventually will replace him of his decision. He thought it was a done deal. But something happened behind the scenes and politics was played. It totally embarrassed the Hall of Fame coach.

When Dean Smith selected Guthridge to replace him and told all parties involved of his decision everything was fine. But what would have happened if a new AD came in and told Smith, after the fact, that not only was he choosing someone else, but was selecting a coach (a former player) that Smith had already discussed who and why Guthridge was selected. It would have undermined Smith's integrity, respect and everything he has done for the University. If you don't think Dean Smith wouldn't have been angry, hurt and upset, than there is nothing I can say that would change your understanding. But then again, this wouldn't and didn't happen to Smith, to Wooden, to Frazier, to Dideaux, to Frank McGuire, to Vince Dooley...and I expect that when Bobby Bowden decides to step away, he will decide who replaces him. It's a common courtesy
