Here in Catawba county you do not have to be on staff to coach, however they would like for you to be. Newton-Conover is a city school system and allows qualified people to coach their programs. In wrestling we have two coaches on staff(teachers) and two who wrestled in college along with alumni who come back to "work out". I wish someone would move to Newton to take over the softball program here.

 

I believe the rule is "more" good than bad. I lot of our coach's were very good ball players. Also a lot of good coach's were never good ball players.
AND I HATE DADDY BALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A rule that requires a coach to be a faculty member is probably the result of some administrator who has had to deal with some kind of problem in the past with a non-faculty coach, and is taking the easy way out. Such an arbitrary rule instantly reduces the size of the potential coaching pool and is probably a reason some schools have programs that struggle (not just softball).

Can think of a certain north-central NC school where that happened a few years ago.

 

The assistant would be a great fit. Not only good coach but good person. Also do you happen to remember a gentleman by the name of Dennis Cook? Was not a teacher at the school and was very successful duringt his time at CC.

 

Bad Coaches

With the crazies we have in todays world who knows what might happen. I think those that have it as their policy do so for a safety reason. Would you want you son/daughter going off to a game or to practice everyday with a drunk or even a child molester??

If the school board and administration does their job by doing an extensive background check, along with many other things to protect our kids, then that statement wouldn't apply. They should be checked out the same way a teacher that works within the school system is checked.

And yes, only having a coach that is within the school faculty limits the quality of the practices and and the way the girls are taught to play the game.
Take for instance these examples: Our head middle school coach didn't even know that a facemask had to be on the batting helmets. Yes, it's true, he didn't know!

2: On a very early season practice, when it was very chilly outside, around 40 degrees, the head coach get's into my DD's batbag (she was the ONLY one on the team with a batbag) because he forgot to get the bats from the gym, and he pulls out her '04 RT. Now, my DD tells him to put it back because it was too cold to use it. He told her to go into the gym and get the other bats, and instead of putting it back, he continued to hit with it, and he CRACKED it straight down the middle of the barrel. I'm sure you probably already know that my wife REALLY let him have it, and he was told to never touch anything in her bag again. That bat was EXPENSIVE and he needed to go and get his bats at the Wal-Mart if he didn't have anymore to use. So, the next day, he came in with 5 BRAND NEW bats! Yes! ..............They were T-BALL BATS!!!! My DD still laughs about that one......CLUELESS!

 

If memory serves me correctly he was replaced with a teacher.
