I have a question for the coaches/wannabe coaches on the board. What is the most important stat in baseball?

Some people will say its Home Runs, but honestly there are some parks in NC that are smaller than crackerjack boxes so teams that play half their games in short parks are going to have alot of homeruns from pop flys in other parks.

Some say its Batting Average, but then you get into the arguement of hits versus errors.

Some say its ERA, but what if theres errors behind you. Your ERA will be low and honestly you can suck as a pitcher.

So my opinion, I am a big fan of On-Base Percentage offensively. Guys, don't be afraid to take a walk. Conversely, I am a big fan of # of walks for pitchers. If you can stay in the strikezone, you have players behind you to make plays. Theres no defense for a walk.

On offense I like On Base Percentage and Slugging Average.

i have a friend who has come up with the most excellent batting stat ever. simply put, its TB+BB/AB+BB. its an index he came up with, and its a gem. works for all hitters.

    To me it is:
    W's
    TEAM OB %
    TEAM FLD %

Remember for a team to be successful, there's on "I" in TEAM or in my case "There's no I in ROCKETS" :applause:

    Hmmmmm.....

No doubt numbers are important in each aspect of the game i.e. PITCHING, HITTING, BASERUNNING, DEFENSE, yet in the end it is WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWw's the "sixth" stat the team and or kid that gets it done period! May be 0 for forever yet base hit GWRBI period! Pitcher etc 0-7 on the season yet throws a game to win the conf championship or biggest game of the year! Hope this makes some sense!?!? I ll take nine or fifteen players who don t give a ---- about themselves or there stats personally and gel and want to play together and watch over and over again WHO prevails! :xyzthumbs :xyzthumbs :xyzthumbs

I couldnt agree more with that comment "O". Ain't it great when a group doesn't care about their own stats and they want to do whatever it takes to win????
