about 10 days ago in CharMeck, MS baseball teams had their cuts. its not unusual for 50-75 kids to try out, so most wind up disappointed, many for the first time. The relatively few that made the team are on top of the world, so congrats.

but in the end whether you made the team or not has no bearing on what you can be or what you can accomplish on the diamond down the road. let me share 2 quick stories:

in MS my twins "tried out" one was cut, the other made it. now they are seniors and both have committed to play (barring injury) in college next year. and the guys on that MS team who made it ahead of the bro who was cut may not even be on a HS roster this year.

next there is the kid who didn't make his 13 or 14 (i can't recall which year) babe ruth all-star team. the kid just threw a 2-hitter for one of the top ranked D1 universities in the nation!

the point is, at 10 on through probably 14 or 15 yrs old, you just don't know what will happen. kids grow, they stop growing, they mature, they get contacts and can see, they lose interest, they get hurt, things change.

So having been there, i want to offer some encouragement to those who may have been disappointed. if you or your kid got cut and the player still loves the game, IT DOESN'T matter. find a place to play and play. work to get better. enjoy the game, the sun, the fresh air. then while the other guys are resting on their laurels, blow 'em away! work hard, have fun and good things will come your way!

    Great point CCSNews,

I know a Senior playing Varsity this year....he didn't make the team his Freshman year, didn't make it his Sophmore year and didin't make it his Junior year....guess what, he never gave up on playing High School baseball. He came out again his Senior year, not only did he make the team but he is a starter....he also just his his first homerun in his last game.

It's never too late, keep going after what you want!!!!

For those of you that know Bo Robinson, he was cut from the team at South Meck. I can't remember now if it was his freshman or sophomore year. He went on to do rather well. You just never know.

    These...

are the facts of life so to speak! All good posts and IF just maybe and IF again the kid(s) love the game that MUCH and their PASSION it that deep as well as the desire to improve as I have told all my players after cutting then IT WILL ALL WORK OUT FOR THE BEST!!!!... If only all "people" could would see as ALL failures as not being failures at all BUT OPPORTUNITIES to do it again yet work etc do it better smarter etc... if IT is there again all work out in the long run CONGRATS to alll kidds who came out and tried and never give up working if you want to continue to play!

Man, having played and coached forever, I've said this a thousand times. Which is the basis for my best piece of advise for younger kids and that is to LEARN THE WHOLE GAME! There is so much more to baseball than hitting a homerun or striking someone out which is easily done from 46' and a 200' fence. But when you get older and playing on a real field and you can't hit it over (as often) and you can't strike them out, then what can you bring to the table?

Are you a disciplined hitter, can you handle the bat, bunt, hit backside, do you have a good understanding of your strike zone, hit for a high average, are you a savvy baserunner, know when to take the extra base (and know when it's not worth the risk!), have an understanding of pitchers moves and slide steps, do you know to tag on ALL fly foul balls at third base, can you make the pivot in the MIF, do you have great footwork, .....well I could go and on but the point is LEARN THE WHOLE GAME, especially when you're young. It will pay dividends down the road.

I guess I've had a brain fart. Since this thread was started I've been trying to figure out the "MS" reference and I don't understand what it means.

    Any help?

There are a ton of stories like this, my son was the last player cut in 7th grade and was asked to stay on as a manager. The coach explained if anyone got hurt he would be moved up. Well after a while someone did indeed get hurt and he got his chance. He then finished the season strong and kept working at it. He has developed into a pretty good player who has earned All-Conference and All-Observer honors as a Junior. The M.S. coach later approached him and admitted how wrong he was. Next year that M.S. kid that got cut will get the opportunity to play at the next level.

To all of you guys that got cut "Believe in yourself, and work hard". Your time will come.

Just to add a little something to the mix. JM Robinson MS decided this year to add more players to their team roster. The reason: to give more kids the opportunity to be a part of a school team. While some of these kids might not ever play school sports again, they have been given this opportunity to be part of a school team at Robinson. Well done!!!!!:satana:
