    No way

the plate umpire didn't call a dead ball..it was the field umpire that said the runner had to go back...that's why everyone is so upset

Seem to be that the bottom line is this: "Did the plate ump have his mask on or not?"

I would have to agree, no pitch, since the umpire behind the plate was not ready, but should of had the awareness of everything going on and stopped it before it happened.

I actually had this happen in a game, ground ball was hit to the infield, shortstop bobbled, throw to 1st, not it time, had runner advance to 3rd, ball thrown back to the pitcher, runner at 3rd takes off to steal home, while the umpire is cleaning the plate (never called time) pitcher can't throw the ball, if she did would nail the ump in the back, runner slides in under the umpire. Go to complain, umpire said never called time, nothing he could do. Run scores, game over. Hows that one for ya!!

    Here's the scoop -

Umpire had slid his mask on and off the top of his head on EVERY pitch. Picture that - after EVERY pitch he slid his mask onto the TOP of his head (who does that?).

So, before the batter singled in the runner from third, the idiot, er, I mean umpire, pointed the ball back into play (the previous pitch was fouled off) and the batter hit the single that drove in the runner from third.

But wait a minute! This time the plate umpire had failed to slide his mask back in front of his face prior to POINTING THE BALL BACK INTO PLAY AND WATCHING THE PITCH!

He was READY people. No quick pitch, no infraction WHATSOEVER!!

BUT, here comes the base umpire to save the day for ER. AFTER (oh yes, AFTER) the run has scored, the dust had settled, the scoreboard had changed, etc, etc, the base umpire calls time, brings back the runner and we have a do over. Yes, a do over.

All because he says the plate umpire did not have his mask on.

Wait, there are no do overs. Surely this man is mad...

It happened, and he got away with it....

    They are everywhere....

I saw one today where the bases were loaded, less than two outs, pop fly above second base person. Infield fly rule--right? Nope, umpire said the second baseman didn't make enough effort to catch it.

Second base dropped it, runners ran, no one called out, no throw anywhere; everyone safe.

Saw one last year where a girl had a "Home Run" taken away by a bat leaned up agaisnt the fence near the dugout entrance. Didn't call it till after the girl had rounded first base.

Not gonna comment on what happened in the game I was not there, but there is at least one case I can think of where there can be a do-over.

When a ball is touched by an illegal glove the other coach gets the option of taking the result of the play or a do-over.
