If this link doesn't get you there, go to the Charlotte Observer Sports, High School and it's there.

I have seen most of these young ladies and I think the Observer did an excellent job in their selections. I'm sure they missed a few but this is a good list.

Congratulations to Chelsea Wilkinson, Alexander Central, as "Player of the Year". Well deserved!!!

I am also excited to see Sarah "Boomer" Mooney, North Meck Vikings picked as Mecklenburg "Player of the Year". I glad to see that I wasn't the only one that thought she had been overlooked this year. A great pick and "In My Opinion" the right one.

I was fortunate to see both of these young ladies play many times this year and the awards are well earned.

Congratulations to these two ladies and all of the ladies on these lists.

Also most of the can be seen this week at The State Games in Charlotte. For game times and location go to http://www.ncfastpitch.org/

    The State Games

The sad part about the State Games is that some of the more deserving girls who should of been in them, didn't know or the information wasn't share about try outs. Some of these girls were in the Charlotte Observer today as well.

    COACH OF THE YEAR

    ROGER WOODELL'S Q & A

    AGE: 47.

WHY HE WAS CHOSEN: Woodell guided Hickory Grove (23-2) to its fourth straight N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A championship..

THIS SEASON'S DEFINING MOMENT: Having my two senior leaders, Amanda McArthur and Jordyn Arrowood, taking vocal and mentoring roles to the team.

YOUR GREATEST COACHING INFLUENCES: My father (Kit Woodell), Tony Dungy and Joe Gibbs.

BEST LESSON YOU'VE LEARNED: There should not be any loss or call on the field that is worth losing your testimony or integrity.

WHAT PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU: Hickory Grove Baptist Church supports recreation as a ministry to the members and the community. Because of this, Randy Jennings, Gene Pressley, Stan Dobner, Leon McLean, Bobby Abernathy and myself created the Christian Action League. This youth baseball/softball program is a non-denominational church league that has been in existence for 12 years, and has had as many as 120 youth teams.

FAVORITE TV SHOWS: “House,” “24,” and all NFL games.

    LAST MOVIE YOU SAW: “Taken.”

YOUR FAMILY: Sharon, wife of 25 years, daughters Krista, age 21, and Kara, age 18.

    Cliff Mehrtens

    PLAYER OF THE YEAR

    CHELSEA WILKINSON'S Q & A

    CLASS: Freshman.

    COLLEGE: Undecided.

    HEIGHT: 5-foot-8.

WHY SHE WAS CHOSEN: Wilkinson was 31-1 with a 0.41 ERA for N.C. 4A champion Alexander Central. In 191 innings, she struck out 358, allowed 55 hits and had 22 shutouts.

    FAVORITE PRO ATHLETE: Cat Osterman.

DEFINING MOMENT THIS SEASON: Winning the 4A state championship and ending it with a strikeout.

    WHAT'S IN YOUR IPOD: Everything.

BEST LESSON YOU'VE LEARNED: That it's not where you start, it's where you finish.

    FAVORITE TV SHOW: “CSI Miami.”

LAST MOVIE YOU SAW : “8 Seconds.”

IF YOU COULD BE PRESIDENT FOR A DAY, WHAT WOULD YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH ? I would want to promote world peace and try to better our relationship with other countries to bring our troops home.
