For anyone interested in such things, the national legion website at www.baseball.legion.org has a listing of national champions and runners up from 1926 through 2005. North Carolina teams I saw on the list are as follows.

    1940 Albemarle Post 76
    1945 Shelby Post 82

    National Runner -Up
    1944 Albemarle
    1954 Gastonia Post 23
    1964 Charlotte Post 9
    1998 Cherryville Post 100
    2003 Cherryville Post 100

I remember Gary Hill telling me about it. He must have pitched an awesome game.

    I met...

Gary many many years ago as a kid! I then had a chance to see meet him again as I believe his son or a relative was playing at Pfeiffer in the late 90's. I had a kid from Morehead (actually three) who were scholarship players there! Gary said I believe his boy/relative (hell maybe a Grandson I don t know) played at Vance not much longer after it first opened. My Uncle admired Gary immensely as Gary had the overpowering fastball and Bill had the 12 to 6 spinner that was one of the best he d ever seen and when he ws on it was unhittable period. Both had great number two pitches!
