http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/sidebyside.jsp Wish to compare. You can do a side by side. It will let you know tons of info. Be Sure you search the Name of the school correctly. Just can not put in UNC. Enter University of North Carolina. You can do this with any school pretty much. Look at the requirements SAT & ACT. You can look into the requirments more. This is a great tool.

    I used this with my

son. To get an idea. It is tough choosing. You look at those avearge scores and then you look at the rate they accept. UNC is like 35% accepted. And on top of that your SAT & ACT scores need to be good and you have to write a paper. Then you are looking at the area the school is in. Then the cost. With the state working this new mandates and private school money losses in the market. This is going to be a really tough time for ours kids. If the are there and if they are going.

    Another thing to consider.....

is whether or not the school is a good fit for your student: large/small, class size, distance from home, course offerings, the overall environment, etc. If baseball were suddenly out of the picture, would he want to continue his education there?

Schools consider other things besides just SAT/ACT scores. We heard many admissions reps tell us that they look at grades, extra-curricular activities, community service, references, and yes, that essay can make a difference too. They want well-rounded individuals who can make a contribution to the school community. Also, you wouldn't want your son to get into a great sports program and be miserable on the academic side.

Even if they don't end up in a top ten baseball school, they can still have a positive experience. You just have to do your homework, and this comparison of schools is a great place to start.

Getting in and how to help yourself get in

I just wanted to chime in here because this is what I do, i.e., I'm a college prof at a private liberal arts school in NC and taught at one of the big publics about 10 years before my current position.

The scores are important and are used as sort of a minimum barometer for establishing a student's qualifications. However, grades (gpa) and SAT/ACT are only one factor of many affecting admission decisions. The other tangible factors have been stated (e.g., essay, interview, activities, etc.).

What I would suggest is that, if you really want to go to a particular school, make yourself stand-out or have some aspect of your application that stands out from others (no, not any cheesey stuff), e.g., go into depth in a cover letter about a unique experience (e.g., eagle scout project) and what it meant to you as a person and how it lended to your personal development, maturation, and any meaning in understanding yourself (personal introspection is rarely engaged at any substantive level, i.e., it may be discussed but these are usually a bit more superficial discussions); that is, talk about a very important event in your life and how it affected you and contributed to your personal self-growth/awareness. This is only one thing you can do, but there are a lot of things/ways to bring yourself from the "borderline" stack of applications to the "review further" or "accepted" stack.

Finally, look at things from the admissions staff's point of view as you prepare your materials. Market yourself, and don't be shy about talking about yourself and recognizing your achievements (not bragging, or coming across conceited, but simply talking about what you've done and giving it context).

So, while the "numbers" are important to establishing some baseline referent for admissions offices, there are ways to improve your opportunities. Don't get me wrong here, if you don't score in the range they are looking for (excluding the exceptions, as there always are exceptions to the rule), there isn't too much you can do to get your application in the "accepted" stack of applicants.

So, finally, let them tell you no because if you don't apply, you are making the decision for yourself; make them tell you no because you never know what they are looking for and you never know if you can fill a "hole" that they want filled. For example, some schools pride themselves on having at least a few students from as many counties in the state as possible and if there are no kids from your county applying, then you may have the characteristic they need to fill one of those holes, but you'll never know this unless you try.

Good luck to all you seniors applying for admission this year; I know it is a long process, but hang in there as things usually work out for the best.
