NCAA Considers Calendar Revision..... Vote results out...

    As Info......

The following was posted on Spy Softball last night.
It appears that the NCAA has moved forward with the proposal to
limit the time in the fall where collegiate coaches can evaluate play on the field....

Rayburn Hesse details several ways to get your voice heard if you oppose this revision...

    Below is the first paragraph.......

The NCAA Management Council is meeting January 6-8 in Orlando. SPY has reviewed the complete list of proposals for all sports, and finds that the Legislative Review Subcommittee has endorsed and recommends that the Management Council approve the NFCA-originated proposal to limit the fall recruiting calendar for softball, and forward the proposal to the full NCAA Board of Directors for final action.

    The proposal numbered 2006-55 reads:

In softball, to specify that evaluations are not permissible (contact only) from the day after Labor Day through Thanksgiving day, except from the second Friday in October through the first Sunday in November (contact/evaluation period); further, to specify that in those states that play the high school softball season in the fall, evaluations shall be permissible during the season, except during dead periods.

NCAA ASKS FOR COMMENTS ON CALENDAR

SPYis reporting the following information on actions taken by NCAA. The NCAA Board of Directors did not approve the measure. Instead, the calendar proposal received less than the required two-thirds majority by the Management Council and is to be reviewed by DI members. The information came from a member institution; the official press release should be circulated on Monday. However, the following are official minutes.

    (n) Proposal No. 2006-55 – Administrative Regulations – Recruiting Calendars – Softball. Intent:In softball, to specify that evaluations are not permissible (contact only) from the day after Labor Day through Thanksgiving day, except from the second Friday in October through the first Sunday in November (contact/evaluation period); further, to specify that in those states that play the high school softball season in the fall, evaluations shall be permissible during the season, except during dead periods. [Source:NCAA Division I Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet (Subcommittee on Recruiting).]

MC ACTION: Approved the proposal by more than a 50 percent margin but less than a two-thirds majority and forwarded the proposal to the membership for comment. (Vote: 1 = 32, 2 = 12.5, 3 = 6.5; See Vote No. 18, Attachment AEffective Date: August 1, 2007.)

Under the weighted system used by the Council, the vote was 32.0 for sending to the Board for adoption; 12.5 for sending to the members for comment; and 6.5 to defeat the proposal.

    What does this mean.....

It was 3 votes short of passing, ie.. getting the 2/3 vote from the Management Council... so now it will be sent for comment by the D1 membership.

Also.. proposal in softball to prohibit coaches from attending an event involving prospective student-athletes in which the original schedule would require a team to play in more than three games in a day, other than due to significant unforeseen events (e.g., weather, power outages) was withdrawn, thus defeating the proposal

    See it all at...
