A friend asked that I pose this question out here for folks. I suspect Charlie would know this answer right off.

A Division III school over recruited (again) this year and will be cutting roughly 1/2 dozen players recruited the prior year. Cuts will be made mid - to - end of November.

Several players want to continue their education and softball careers at other schools. A couple are considering schools within NC that play within the same conference as the school making cuts. If the players transfer to a school within the same conference, do they have to sit for a year?

    Thanks for the help!

    Amazing how that happens......

There are several factors that will apply.

    1. This is not a NCAA rule... It would be how each individual conference handles the situation.. The USA South, which William Peace is a member, does not penalize the student athlete. There are allowed to transfer as long as they are eligible per NCAA transfer rules..

I do not know how the rule is applied at the other two conferences represented in NC by Div III schools. You would need to contact the
ODAC or Great South Conferences for clarification.

    2. NCAA transfer rules.
number 1.. Transferring athlete must be academically eligible to return to her athletic team. Min requirements are 2.0 GPA and 24 transferable hours.
Failure to achieve this means a year of residency at the new school before they would be eligible.

This is to prevent athletes that don't perform academically to just jump and go play somewhere else.

Div III has a self release rule, which allows the athlete to leave without prejudice from the previous coach, etc., as long as they are academically qualified.

    3. Clock starts ticking first day of freshman year. You get 10 semesters to play 8. ( 5 years to play 4)

    Hope this helps....
I would consult the compliance officer at both of the involved schools, so everything is on the up and up.

Perfect, thanks Charlie. I can answer that question for DII but DIII I certainly wasn't sure of. Copying and pasting this to my friend. Thanks from her as well!
