    Yes there are several high school coaches that coach legion teams. While it is not as much as in the past, it can still impact school teams. I agree with Coach, that if coaches want to vacation and/ or attend the clinic then it is their choice.If they want to work with their kids, it is their choice. But to regulate something this just doesnt make sense...

    I know of a couple of High School coaches who coach travelball teams with their son on the team and July is a big month for travelball with the National tournaments..

    I don't think anyone needs to panic.
    It has been put to me like this:
    "Nobody is going to do anything on our (public school) campus during those two weeks. No basketball, baseball, football, weightroom - nothing."
    The key being "on school campus".

    Now, while I don't know about all ADs/adtratministrators, I don't think many are going to go looking off campus at legion games or showcase tournaments for offenders. Further, some coaches use this time and these teams to supplement income in NON-PAID summer months - and most don't want to infringe there.

    Like many things - right or wrong - I perceive a lot of looking the other way during those two weeks, unless activity is on a school campus or in school uniforms or with school equipment.

    Since football can't work out those two weeks either, they have no reason to run report a baseball coach for doing anything since it can't interfere with football in any way. Hope that doesn't offend any who coach baseball and football - but it's often the real intersection of "tension".

    Clarification release from NCHSAA about dead period

    TO: Athletic Directors
    FROM: NCHSAA Staff
    DATE: January 22, 2013
    RE: Clarification of Summer Dead Periods
    As you are aware, the NCHSAA Board of Directors, at its winter meeting, approved a summer dead period, consisting of two separate weeks in July, for all sports. We have received questions regarding the interpretation of these dead periods and are now sharing this memo to clarify and define permitted and non-permitted activities.
    The 2013 Summer Dead Periods will be:

    (1) The week of July 4: Monday, July 1 – Sunday, July 7; AND

    (2) The week of NCCA Coaches clinic: Monday, July 22 – Sunday, July 28

    During the “Summer Dead Periods” no NCHSAA member school-sponsored activities may be organized or conducted by any NCSHAA coach or school staff member (whether full-time, part-time, or volunteer) that involve students at NCHSAA member schools.
    School-sponsored activities include any of the following (i.e. these activities MAY NOT be done):
    · Activities, other than Third-Party Outings and Bona Fide Competitions (both as defined below), conducted (1) at any NCHSAA member school; or (2) at any location if the activity is organized or controlled by an NCHSAA member school, coach or staff member (whether full-time, part-time or volunteer) (e.g., summer skills development or camps, open facilities, conditioning exercises, laps around the school track, etc.);
    · Activities at any location where attendance by students is deemed mandatory, whether actual or perceived (e.g., coach organizes an event away from school property and states, suggests or implies in any way that any students not attending will suffer consequences of any kind … whether this means making a team, enjoying playing time, becoming team captain, etc.);
    Examples of activities that would be considered “non-school-sponsored activities” and MAY be done:
    · Third-Party Outings: Coach or staff member takes students to a third-party camp at a non-NCHSAA member school (e.g., college-sponsored summer skills or team camp, etc.) where attendance by students is NOT deemed mandatory, whether actual or perceived (as described above);
    · Bona Fide Competitions: An organized league is conducted through a bona fide third party organization where (1) the organization purchases appropriate liability insurance and pays for all game-related expenses (e.g., facilities, staffing, etc.); (2) students are not required to attend or participate; (3) student transportation is not provided by NCHSAA member school vehicles; and (4) students use their own equipment.
    As always, please call us with any questions.

    The last section of the clarification (last post above) about "bona fide competitions" seems to allow for Legion, Showcase, etc as legitimate "third parties" if they are handling insurance and expense of competition/facilities.

    Told you not to worry....

    Purpose of this edict?

    Please, can anyone post the reason(s) for this policy. And please keep it simple.
    And remember, some of the best organizations end up disappearing because they added rules supposedly addressing problems that most reasonable people felt were not issues.

    Thanks, :coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee:

    I really am not sure about the reasoning, but I can assure you that the NCHSAA will not "disappear" any time soon. [Use as reference the IRS. Questionable, maybe unnecessary, but not going anywhere...] Without the NCHSAA, there is no sanctioning of events. Everything would become AAU/USSSA/JO/SHOWCASE, etc. - or even what some in baseball have at times referred to as "outlaw" - ooooh...

    They don't always,"get it right," but they are necessary and viable.
