The North Carolina High School Athletic Association have completed their winter meetings. The North Carolina Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association submitted a list of concerns to be discussed at the meeting of the Sports Committee. They were gracious enough to put our entire list of concerns as an agenda item. That means that each concern was addressed by the committee. We thank them for recognizing our Association in this matter. The list of concerns and the responses are listed on the the first page of the Coaches Association website. Although our concerns did not garner much support, our voice was heard. We as an Association will continue working for the sport we love. Hopefully, that unified voice will be able to sway the powers that be in the coming years. We will work as an Association to keep the NCHSAA informed about our concerns. The website is www.ncfastpitch.org.

Coaches asso. Thanks for trying. I agree with nearly all of the things you recomended. Especially dead periods (what a joke they are). Until the nchsaa evolves in to this century they won't change anything. The problem we have is that our sport is growing rapidly and the idiotsin our school systems, local and state wide aren't smart enough to grow with it. I just hope we all see this and move on to full time travel ball and forget highschool ball in the NEAR future.

It's good to hear that the assoc. got on the agenda. I would like to see some of the items changed, but it will take a while for the nchsaa to change them. I don't think you'll ever see the dead periods changed by one group asking. I believe you need to get all the sports to go together to get something like that changed. I do have a question though, POP. Why try to change the fence to 200 max when the high school recommendation is a min and a max. I was thinking it is 180-220, but that may be wrong. Looking online I found 185-235. Why not try to get that as the max instead of 200. 200 would mean that some very nice parks that already meet the high school recommendations would need to be changed. Look at Alexander Central, one of the, if not the nicest facility in NC. They would have to make adjustments since the fence is 220. I'm just a little curious as to why 200 instead of what the recommendation is and will this continue to be pushed for.

Good job on being heard, and hopefully it will continue.

200 feet was not the intent. We have been told and were told about 10 years ago that fields needed to be conducive to playing fastpitch softball. The minimum and maximum are not in question here. 200 feet was a reference. We have been playing on old baseball fields with 300 feet or more fences, sometimes 360 in center. That is not conducive to fastpitch softball. Suggested or recommended distances are fine with the Association. We want to see the game played with legitimate fencing. Temporary or fixed. A ball hit in the gap on a 200 foot fence is a double. If the outfield is deep, it could be a single. If that same ball is hit on a 300 foot fence, it is a triple or homerun. Also, we would like to see the old baseball mounds removed. The Association just wants to level the playing field, literally and figuratively.
