    The defense must appeal the failure to tag up by the runner from 1B (normally, this is a live ball appeal performed by throwing the ball to the first baseman standing on 1B). It is a timing play depending on when the defense appeals the failure to tag up vs when the runner crossed the plate.

    In general, I agree with this statement: Once the next pitch is thrown, you pretty much have to live with the current conditions. The only exception I can think of off-hand would be an illegal substitute could still be exposed.

    It seems kind of wierd because there is clear and continuing evidence of the players' error, but since I've never seen a casebook play to contridict it, I think I'd leave them where they sit.

    It's like batting out of order, unless it is caught before the next pitch it's too late and the evidence is very obvious - the scorebook.
