Pop Rivers,Cardcoach, Bmac, or anyone else with knowledge of this. Is it true Forsyth county has a new rule that if a person is coaching high school they cannot coach "summer ball". If so, does this apply only to the head coach or all coaches? what are the chances of this spreading statewide? This could have huge ramifications on Forsyth county and North Carolina softball as we know it. Good or bad is of yet to be determined. Thanks for any information guys and gals and good luck to all in the coming season.

This is the first time that I have heard of this. I will get on the phone today and see what I can find out. I know I am employed by the school system in which I work for 10 months. I don't believe I would stand for them telling me what I can and cannot do during my time off during the summer. To be honest with you, it would not be any of their business where I decided to spend my time. That would be like telling me that I couldn't go to the beach because there might be a Softball tournament going on. I will look into this and respond as soon as I know something. Sorry for the personal input there, it kind of rubbed me the wrong way.

Well, now that is a different story altogether. The NCHSAA is very clear and has made it clear to our Association, and everybody else that would listen that all coaches who are associated with a high school team cannot be coaching travel ball and having contact with their players during the "dead period". That rule will not change and there are penalities for anyone who breaks this dead period rule. Fines are levied on the schools Athletic Departments and the fines go up with each infraction. I still don't know why a county school system is getting involved(if they are). This is a matter for the NCHSAA.

You are correct, unfortunately. There is a proposal that will voted upon soon by the WSFC school board that if approved, would prohibit any coach in the county from coaching a team in the summer. This has nothing to do with the dead period.

Apparently what has brought this on is that there is a very well known and successful basketball coach in the county who coaches an AAU basketball team in the summer . Allegedly, he was using that team as a "recruiting tool" to get top players in the area to play for him at his high school.

It seems a group of very upset parents brought this issue up and demanded something to be done. So rather than punishing this one very successful coach, it seems that all of the coaches in the county will suffer if this idiotic proposal passes.

If this thing does get approved, there are many very good high school coaches that would have to choose between a summer team and their high school team. This would be an easy decision for the coaches I know. Also, just think what this would do the the legion baseball teams in the county as well as HS basketball, soccer and volleyball. These sports also have summer travel teams.

That big sucking sound you would hear would be all the good coaches leaving Forsyth County as fast as they can.

I also agree with Pop in the fact some HS coaches use coaching summer teams as a means to supplement their income. I could see this thing being challenged in court real fast. As long it is legal, I don't see how you can prohibit anyone from working/doing a summer job or activity be it coaching a team or working at a camp or whatever. :twocents:

Hopefully some Forsyth Co. coaches can add to or verify what I have heard.

Could also be that some coaches in softball in Forsyth County are using travel ball as a tool to recruit players.:deal: Wasn't a Forsyth County softball coach caught working with some of his players last August during the dead period? :headslap
