    Man, tough situation

That article brings up alot about today's society and who is responsible and to what degree. If the facts are as stated, I could see a future where school systems could face great difficulty getting people willing to coach. They didn't exactly stand behind their personnel. I can't see how anyone could be expected chaperone 24 hours per day.

This whole situation stinks. There are certainly character issues and I'm not speaking about the actual alcohol drinking

what's really sad is how we continually punish the many for the behavior of a few. we saw this constantly during the years our children attended CMS ...

i would not be surprised to see CMS ban or restrict overnight trips ...

and i think you are right to wonder about how many people would want to coach in some of these situations. having to deal with administrators, officials and the offensive/disgusting behavior of some parents and kids has to take some joy out of the game for coaches.

MAYBE some of the kids involved in this situation can use this as a stepping stone towards greater maturity. if those responsible simply admitted what really happened here, maybe those coaches could be reinstated.

Most likely we do not have the full story here however the coach can't be responsible for everything these kids do. This isn't some 12U AAU team with kids running up and down the hotel hallways. The kids have to assume responsibilty. If the coach knew of the drinking and didn't stop it that's one thing, but he can't be expected to sit in the hallway all night and make sure the kids are in their rooms.

    Coaches

I personally know Coach Long and his family. I can tell you that Independence will be losing a coach with a wealth of knowledege about the game and especially catching.

I know that these coaches are supposed to be examples and have to be especially careful on high school functions but it seems a little shocking that the coaches were not backed by the school a little more than this. It is against the law for minors to drink and steal property and get a 10 day suspension. But the 30 yr old and 24 yr old coach taste a drink loses the opportunity to coach, probably the main reason they are even teaching. I just do not feel that the school officials backed the coaches in the situation at all. Gonna be hard to hire someone for this spot with not much support.
