Technically, "FieldTurf" is a band of artificial turf, like Kleenex is a kind of tissue. The technology as a whole is called Infill Turf (because the nylon blades are "infilled" with the rubber granules or the rubber/sand mix. It's good stuff and plays just like grass. Depending on the type of nylong tufting used, it can be MUCH softer and less abrasive than grass. It's fun stuff. Only problem is, if you have a HUGE rain event (25 year storm or worse) the underdrain can backup and the stuff will float. THAT makes for an interesting sight.

There is something not right about that field. But then again, I hate long baseball pants and the designated hitter.

a quote from former ML'er Richie " call me Dick" Allen: If cows can't graze on it, I don't wanna play on it.

    Update on the field

Looks like the new ASU field won't be ready until at least the beginning of April. All home games during March have been relocated to L.P. Frans stadium in Hickory.

Here's an article with more details.

That has got to be the weirdest thing I've ever heard of. I took Sport Facility and Design last semester and this type of stuff NEVER came up. I'll have to let my professor know.

It's about 45 miles from Boone to Hickory on Hwy-321.

    New pictures - Sat. 3/17

Here's some more pictures of the new ASU baseball field. I took them today, Saturday 3/17. Unfortunately it snowed this morning in Boone so you can't see much of the turf.

It looks like they have put turf down everywhere but in right field. With the snow covering the field I couldn't tell if they had started putting down the sand/rubber mix or not - if they have they probably haven't put much down.

I would guess that they need another two weeks or so to finish the playing field. ASU has scheduled their March home games for L.P. Frans field in Hickory.

It's nice to know that next year when it snows like this they'll be able to sweep the snow off the field and play ball! Yippee! It must have been about 20 degrees out there today. Great baseball weather.

Here's a link to the pictures. Album 4.

I went out to the field today and that turf looks great. I don't think they could've found a better area for the stadium to be. I also do not think that there will be a problem with sliding on the turf because Im sure many of you have seen how those football players slide across that stuff. The indoor facility looks like it has a lot of room and the dugouts look nice. There is plenty of parking out there so there won't be any problem with that. The only downside is how hidden it is all the way up there behind the Broyhill, but other than that it will be, I think, one of the best fields around NC. Can't wait to see some games played on that field!
