At the DI Coaches' Conference this past January, the coaches voted in an additional series of periods during the year when their recruiting activities would be limited, if not prohibited altogether. The vote was in reponse, principally, to the proliferation of showcase events throughout the year;and the resulting strain on college recruiting budgets and coaches' time with their teams and families.

The new schedule has created some confusion among players and their families as to when DI recruiters are able to travel off campus. The attached thread from the HSBaseballWeb cites the new schedule and defines what can and cannot be done during the various periods.

Thanks Prepster for the information. It does clear up many areas of confusion. I guess the only question I have is this. Some of the Showcase events are scheduled during the No contact times. Does this mean they will or won't be attending the Showcases during those times?

I read it as they can still come, but can not contact.

The real question is the definition (to the NCAA) of "evaluation". What constitutes an evaluation? Does traveling to a showcase to observe multiple games constitute evals? or are evals considered more of a one-on-one situation coach-to-player candidate?

Any guidelines published? Interpretations of the rules?

The HSBaseballWeb thread I referenced in my prior post comes the closest of any I've found, so far, to pinning the definitions down.

It's been my understanding that "evaluations" can be performed in showcase settings.

I've heard that some previously-scheduled showcases were going to have to find new dates because of the new limitations.

I wonder whether ImpactBB can shed some light on some of this.

    NCAA Definition of an "Evaluation":

    "Evaluations

An evaluation is any off-campus activity used to assess your academic qualifications or athletics ability, including a visit to your high school (during which no contact occurs) or watching you practice or compete at any site." (Emphasis added).

Evaluations cannot be conducted during the "Dead Period", but that only lasts a short time.

Also from the same source (NCAA.ORG)

"In football, basketball, softball, women's volleyball and men's lacrosse, there are certain periods when a coach may contact you off the college campus and/or attend your practices and games to evaluate your athletics ability. In all other sports, contacts and evaluations may occur anytime except during a dead period." (Emphasis added)

So ....... Quiet periods have NO EFFECT on attending showcases. Dead periods squash attendence at showcases. The dead periods for HS Baseball this fall ARE:

    Dead Periods
    November 10th - Nov 13th .....
    January 2nd - Jan 6th ....
    April 12th - April 15th (2004) ....

Hmmmmm ... that's a grand total of 13 days between now and the end of the next HS baseball season. Other than that, it's fair game to attend showcases for college coaches.

If you look at those dates, you'll find that they are (generally) weekdays anyway. This isn't going to have much impact.
