I am new to the board so I may ask some questions about stuff that has been covered before so bare with me.

Being a new coach coming from the baseball ranks I have a question. How do you guys do batting practice? I am not a big fan of pitching machines, I know they have their place and purpose but I also know from baseball there is nothing like hitting live pitching. Just wondering if the coaches throw or how most of you deal with this. Thanks and please be patient I am just trying to get as much info as I can to help prepare my girls.

    Nothing like live

There is nothing like live pitching. Hard on the pitchers but great for the hitters. Soft toss and tee work is great but live is a plus. IMO Good luck!

    can

Live pitching can be alright if kids will swing and not wait for perfect pitch, however we never do live pitching as our practice time is so limited. We front toss from 20 feet and do tee work as you can correct flaws easier watching the swing. To each his own,

Soft toss and tee and this

Let me also add that you can have your coach or your self, setup a pitching screen about 20-25 ft in front of homeplate and then do live pitching to the batter from there and they can swing away. Half speed about (25mph) from there is equal to about 50mph from 40-43ft. And coaches can do the pitching and have better control on what the players are looking at.

Front toss like Rodney spoke IMHO is the single best thing you can do. It depends on ages as well. But you cannot go wrong, let the kids work on mechanics and let the ball get deep in the hitting zone.

    1. Fundamentals in hitting!

    2. Stations...soft toss, tee work, bunting drills, hittting butterbeans with a thunder stick, CDs gig of a rip line, cages at places like a Grand Slam, camps, star ball dropper, and one of the most neglected gigs in hitting drills is a batter learning to see the ball as a strike or a ball. Dot Richardson had a drill that put a kid on bothe the left and right sides of the plate.
The batters were not allowed to swing at the live pitch coming over the plate. The batters were to put their swing into motion IF she saw a strike and to lay off the other pitches. IE teaching patience at the plate. If one or the other kid drives forward like they're gonna swing, then that kid loses her spot at the plate and another kid comes up. Its a cool drill if its run right.

    3. Pitching machines are fine.

    4. Live pitch is the best but lets face the fact that it can only used on a limited basis.

    5. REPEAT Fundamentals!!!! Practice makes perfect only if perfect practice.

    Batting Practice

I handle my batting/hitting practice a little different. All of the suggestions are great and I use them in various practices. But also, I like to use live pitching, but set it up at actual game speed, with balls and strikes being called. This gives both pitchers, catchers, and hitters honest work and feedback. It eliminates the hitters standing there and looking for the perfect pitch. good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of fastpitch softball.
