......how 'bout them? Has there been rule changes that apply this spring? ....ie, pitching distance, metal cleats, coaches stuff?

How many games, regular season games, can a HS team play?

Has there been any significant shake ups in schools being say 2A in a conference last year and now have moved to say 3A?

    Just asking with no agenda,

    Fishman

    Rule Changes

1-1-2b- Changed the fast-pitch distance to 43 feet effective with the 2010-2011 academic year. Individual state associations are permitted to adopt the 43 feet distance in 2009-2010, if desired. *** North Carolina will play at 43 feet this spring!

1-5- Identified and specified guidelines for each part of the bat, involving knob, handle/grip, taper, barrel, and end cap. In addition, the rule clarifies that the taper must be a solid surface. *** This was put in to check for bat tampering.

3-2-12- Added an exception to permit hard, unadorned devices, such as bobby pins, barettes and hairclips, no longer than 2 inches, to be worn to control a player's hair. ***This needed to be put in. Girls could wear steel spikes, but could not wear a bobby pin in their hair!

9-6-6- Changed the required number of innings pitched to half the total number of innings played in the game for a pitcher to be credited with a win. ***This change was because of the "mercy rule".

Teams may play 23 regular season games. 24 games may be played if one game is designated as an endowment game.

By rule, established in 2009, player may wear metal spikes.

Assistant coaches are not to address the umpires to question any decisions once the game has started. Everything must go through the Head coach.

Teams may play four games a week as long as they don't exceed 3 days. (Double-headers). Four singles may be played in a week as long as the 4th game is on Saturday and is mutually agreed on by both teams. Absolutely no games will be played on Sunday.

    Hope these help!!!

Pop covered these changes pretty well, however, the NCHSAA has put together a committee to study changes for all sports that will help save on cost. Possible changes could be number of games played in a regular season, ( a 10 - 20 % reduction is proposed ), number of teams that make the palyoffs etc. All High School coaches were asked to give input. Don't know when changes would take place or how many changes would be made.

Just like the nchsaa. we have been asking to be able to play more games in a season for years and now thy want to make it less. If that one passes look for a drop off in participation in school ball and a surge in spring travelball

:N1Idontgetit: This is nuts! No school is REQUIRED to play the maximum number of games allowed in the rules. They are only required to play conference games. If a school system wants to reduce costs by reducing games they are already free to do so by eliminating non-conference games. This budget crunch is only as temporary as the recession. There is no need for the state to mandate reduced schedules for everyone.

    Hard to say!

Mary Struckhoff, NFHS assistant director and liaison to the Softball Rules Committee stated, "This is primarily and editorial change. We just wanted to be more detailed in our specifications in order to give manufacturers, coaches, players, and umpires guidance on what is and not permissible."

Personally, I think if it was deemed legal in seasons past, it is still considered so. I know it would be at our school until someone explained to me with documentation otherwise!
