Would love to hear comments on this recent article from Baseball America. Three main areas - APR, Scholorship/Roster limits, and minimum 33%scholarships. Sorry if discussed already but I did not find it. Recently I enjoyed listening to an ACC coach discuss the NCAA treatment of baseball and specifically about Acedemic Progress Rates. He indicates they are asking incoming freshmen to enroll in summer school.

If passed as stated in the article, it would seem that a reduction in the number of games played would be inevitable. With the APR combined with a compressed schedule (4-6 games per week), a college coach is going to be forced to choose between number of games and keeping qualified top shelf players.
The reality of college baseball is that a good number of players go in thinking they are on a "3 year plan". In other words, they believe they'll be drafted after their junior year. Obviously this doesn't happen for all of them. What could happen with these new rules is an explosion of high quality players going the juco route. A baseball career is their primary goal verses a college degree. Right or wrong, it's a fact.
Additionally, if college players are going to have to attend summer school instead of playing summer ball that will lead to two things. First, higher costs for parents due to summer school tuition and room and board not being part of a scholarship. Secondly, no summer ball equals less exposure.
Bottom line, it seem to me that the proposed changes could be acceptable if not for the compressing of the season for the benifit of a minority of northern schools (damn yankees!). What could happen is that the southern baseball conferences could leave the NCAA and form, say the Sunbelt College Baseball Association. Think about that!

Wouldn't it be nice if they increased the number of scholarships as part of the plan! Seems like that would equal things out a little more.
