Davidson County has a growing reputation for being a hotbed of high school softball, with North Davidson winning a state and national championship in 2010 and Central Davidson winning three straight state championships from 2007-09.

In July, some of the best softball players in the world will perform on North Davidson’s field.

The Chicago Bandits and NPF Diamonds of National Pro Fastpitch will play a four-game, regular-season series at North’s field on July 26-28.

“It’s an opportunity to see some of the best players in the world that will be playing on those teams,” said North coach Mike Lambros. “We’re hoping to pack the house each night.”

The teams will play at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26; a doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on July 27; and a game at 7 p.m. July 28. An all-session pass costs $32. Single-game tickets for the Tuesday and Thursday games are $10 and tickets for Wednesday’s doubleheader are $15. Tickets can be purchased at www.triadsportscoverage.com.

Co-hosting the event is SanBill Academy, which is owned by Billy “Chief” Gerald, North’s longtime pitching coach and mentor to many prep hurlers from the Piedmont Triad area.

“We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to host an NPF series right here at North Davidson High School,” Gerald said in a statement on the NPF website. “We are anxious to bring this professional softball experience to the softball fans in North Carolina.”

There are four teams in the NPF for 2011, with the Akron Blazers and USSSA Pride being the other two. Leading the Bandits is Monica Abbott, who pitched for the U.S. world championship team in 2010. Abbott was the 2007 collegiate pitcher of the year while at Tennessee. Former University of North Carolina star Brittany McKinney plays for the Diamonds. Other well-known players in the league include former Texas pitching star Cat Osterman and former Kings Mountain standout Morgan Childers, who pitched for USC Upstate.

“Abbott throws it at 70-plus,” Lambros said.

Lambros said there would be clinics and social activities in conjunction with the series.

National Pro Fastpitch is headquartered in Nashville. The league has operated since 1997 and was previously known as Women’s Pro Fastpitch (WPF) and Women’s Pro Softball League (WPSL).
