Due to the huge amount of NW4A Fans on here I figure this one tournament deserves its own thread. If Braves wants to merge all conference tournaments into this thread thats ok too.

Lots of intresting story lines in this tournament. South Caldwell clearly the favorite but narrowly escaped Taylorsville last night and have lost to WHS. WHS playing its best hitting baseball of the season. ACHS and ACR can make runs and which ever wins its opening round game will be in the playoffs with an auto-bid. The loser will get a wild-card. Of course East Burke is the surprise team, can they make the finals or can Freedom pull off a miracle upset?

    Thursday's First Round
#7 Seed Freedom at #2 Seed East Burke
#6 Seed McDowell at #3 Seed Watauga
#5 Alexander Central at #4 AC Reynolds (Winner Gets Number 4 Seed in State Playoffs)

    Friday's Semi-Finals (M.S. Deal Stadium, Granite Falls, N.C.)
Either MHS or WHS vs Either EBHS or FHS 4:30 PM
#1 Seed South Caldwell vs Either ACR or ACHS 7:00 PM

Saturday's Finals (M.S. Deal Stadium, Granite Falls, N.C.)
    Two Semi-Final Winners 7:00

South Caldwell defeats Alexander Central 6-0 behind 13 strikeouts, 2 hits allowed and no walks given up by Jimmy Messer. South goes to 20-1 on the season setting up a rematch with Watauga who gave the Spartans their only loss on the season 1-0.

South's lead off hitter and speedster Dibernardi hit an inside the park homerun to put the first 3 runs on the board in the bottom of the 2nd. The same inning Brad Chavis hit a towering homerun after having a 3-0 count on him. This is Chavis' 7th HR in his last 5 games he got to play start to finish. The coach for the Cougars was not too happy that the pitcher put a pitch down the gut of the plate expecting Chavis to take the pitch looking for a walk.

Should be a great game tomorrow night at 7 at M.S. Deal Stadium at Granite Falls Middle School. Most people prior to the season expected these 2 teams to battle it out for the Conference championship. Cody Penny will be on the hill for the Spartans.

Everyone is gunning for the Spartans who are ranked #7 in the nation in Baseball America and #9 in USA Today.

    Great game.

EB jumps out 1-0 early. Watauga ties it on a Dunningan base it in the fifth and scores the go ahead run on a sac fly.

EB come right back to tie it with a double steal of home and then Ethan Icard gives them the lead with a two out base hit in the sixth.

Dunningan leads off the top of the 7th with a blast that hits the top of the left field fence and bounces over for the game tying HR.

Watauga loads the bases with two out. Cory Roney comes in to relieve Icard but a base hit to right (name please) on 0-2 pitch gives Watauga lead.

Jon Sharpe mows the Cavs down in order in the bottom of the frame for the win.

    WP: Sharpe - Complete game
    LP: Icard (sp?)

    WHSPioneers help me out.

    Mr. Church!!

Adam Church! He is the man.

I want to say possible the best High School baseball game I have ever seen. Pitching from both sides were very impressive. Hitting in “have to” situations, WOW - neither pitcher gave up that many hits but both teams came through when runners were on base. The Coaching was great to watch. Both Coaches did a great job during the game to put their teams in position to win. I love the small ball and that is what it took to win this battle. Umpiring was very solid, other than letting the Coaches drag eraser boards to the middle of the field to draw out defensive plays. Only kidding but I thought I was watching a basketball game a few times. Sorry about that Blue, not one questionable call and strike zone stayed consistent. Fans were excited but not over board. This was just one of those games you could not have scripted any better. Hitting the HR in the seventh to tie the game, having a power guy come to the plate with bases loaded and he slaps a single to right field to score the go ahead run and than the pitcher coming in and simply throws gas to slam the door. I know it’s an old saying but both teams “left it all on the field” last night. My hats off to East Burke! You guys go get’em in the 4A Tournament!
