    Umpires

do a job that pays very little but without them there would be no game. They are human and they make mistakes like everyone does. Like every profession there are some outstanding ones and some not so outstanding ones. There is no way to know that day if the crew is going to enforce every single rule in the book or not. Why? Because they are human. Some will see a rule such as the no jewelry rule as silly and will let it ride on wrist bands. Maybe the umpire has cancer or lost his mother to cancer. Maybe another strickly enforces this rule because it is a rule. So how can you as a coach avoid any issues with rules like this? Follow them. Tell your team no wrist bands , no jewelry - period.

By doing this you avoid ejections in every case regardless of who the crew is that day. Like everyone else I have seen some outrageous calls by umpires. I have seen some guys that were to put it mildly bad umpires. But I have also seen some bad coaches , players and fans as well. The VAST majority of these guys work all day , rush to the field to call a game for peanuts. Take s*it from people for 2 to 3 hours from folks who for the most part have no clue what is going on. Get blamed for a teams loss. Get blamed for a kids bad game. Get blamed for things completely out of their control and then drive like hel to another game at 7pm and do it all over again. Again for peanuts. Why? Because most of them love the game and love being around the players and being part of a game they truly love.

    umpires & respect

I totally agree with respecting umpires as people and that nobody is perfect. I am very rarely critical of them as I believe the vast majority of umpires are doing their best and really giving it their all, as the post from Coach 27 indicates. However, there is also a minority that are there to show their authority/superiority rather than be stewards of the game and encourage fairness. Thus my question about "the umpire set in stone" -that one was just crazy to me and maybe someone can learn from Stretchy's comments - move as a courtesy to the players.

I bet it would bother the kid he ejected, his coach, and his parents---just say, "It's a rule, they were warned, and I enforced it"---if the player dropped the F--- bomb on the ump, I could see it---maybe he's quit rolling on the floor long enough to go kick a dog, or let the air out of his neighbor's tires, or put chili-powder in his wife's panties.----I'll drop it now, maybe he didn't mean it the way I took it.:agreed:

    track

track rules are even more detailed than anywhere else.
    at least for their clothes.

many track teams dont get the money to even have new uniforms on a regular basis. I have seen teams with 3 or 4 different uniforms. some buy your own. and so forth.
in individual events this doesnt matter. but in a relay ...... i have seen a team DQd for one person having different colored shoes than her 3 teammates.

the rule is to remind coaches before the game about jewelry rules. practise is normal fo rthe first person who steps in the box or gets noticed wearing it to be called out and a public warning to both teams is made.

    Not So Much...

Kind of but not so much.

At the pre-game meeting the coaches are asked if their teams are properly equipped. This not only for the silly jewelry rule but for several others as in Rules 1, 3 and 5.

Please read this very carefully...The act of the Umpire asking the coaches the above question DOES NOT act as a team warning...To put another way...You messed the rule up. Not to worry you're in a class of many.

When the UIC or Base Umpire seeing jewelry for instance...A team warning shall be issued and the head coach shall be advised of the player's number. The player will remove the jewelry. After that point ANY other player from THAT team who enters the field of play during a LIVE BALL shall be ejected (DQ'ed) for the rest of the contest.

To add a little more to the stew...Just because team A is issued a warning does not mean team B is warned too. Each team must be warned prior to ejection.

    Is there a single

hs coach that does not know about this rule? Does he tell his players before every game not have any of this stuff on? I never allowed any of it in practice muchless a game. So if a player gets ejected for wearing jewelry etc while in a game who's at fault? The umpire for enforceing the rules or the player for failing to follow them?

The bottom line is you dont have to worry about any of this if you simply dont wear any of it while your playing. You dont have to worry about which umpire crew enforces it and which one does not. You dont have to worry about who warns and who does not.

If a player gets ejected for wearing jewelry he only needs to look at one person for the blame. And its not the umpire.

    Bottom Line

Coach, with out a doubt you're right. But with that said Umpires have a process that must be followed so student athletes can be warned before being removed from the contest.
Umpires are adults being paid to perform their duties. Umpiring is hard enough that’s why the process is in place.
