Probably so, extra players are kept to cover for injury, to rest others in a blowout, and possibly as specialist of some type. The coach can carry 18 (playoofs) and normally does so. Coaches are paid to win, therefore playing what he considers the best is job security. Our coach does a good job of subbing when the situation allows(nonconference or blowouts), and does have a couple specialist that pinch hit, pinch run, or as defensive replacements. The will normally carry a full roster, even if there is a division of talent. Why not allow a good kid a roster spot if one is available. In most cases they know where they stand with play time issues, but love the game and the friendships developed there.

Huge game for the Cougars, went in facing one of the best pitchers in the conference and dominated from the start. Mckinney relied on his fastball throughout but the Cougars brought their "A" game tonight and delivered a clinic on how to hit the fastball. Will Marlowe continued to swing a hot stick by crushing a Mckinney fastball for a 2 run homerun in the top half of the 1st to give AC a 2-0 lead. The Cougars never let up, and continued to pound out hit after hit against the hard-throwing McKinney. Not sure but I believe McKinney left the game when it was 7-1. The Cougars added 5 more and cruised to a 12-1 win to remain at the top of the NW 3A/4A Conference. The Cougars delivered 16 hits(unofficial), 12 runs and John Milsaps turned in a stellar performance on the bump with 10 K's. Other Cougars who stepped up were LaSalle, Arms, Chapman, Pennell, Gilleland, Marlowe, all with 2 hits. Ethan Pierce delivered a 2 run double to right in the last inning to seal it for Alexander Central.

I'm sure you are not the only one who thinks this, but that doesn't mean you're right, it just means you're not alone in your frustration.

 

good enough play?

Having 18 players on your roster that are good enough to play is a great problem to have but not many have that problem. One problem all coaches have is fans(parents) that have no clue of what it takes to build a winning program. If a coach's job was to keep all the parents happy, they'd all be looking for a job. The best thing parents can do is to come to the games, support the players, the program, the coaches and buy some peanuts and cracker jacks and enjoy the game!!!!!! These men that you're bitchin about spend countless hours with your boys and know who are the best 9 to put on the field, please have some respect for these individuals that give up their time and energy to field a team that is productive. Believe it or not, your boys may not want to admit it but they know their roles on the team and are willing to do what they have to do to be apart of a winning program, whether it be on the bench or on the field. Their role is just as important. It may be as a pinch hitter or runner, it may be a relief role as a pitcher or it may be encouraging his teammates during the game. Whatever their role is, accept it, his time will come.

A lot of not so noticeable things come into play, other than performance. Coaches are human and they are affected by some other stuff:

1. Is the kid likeable? It's easy to ignore a kid who shoots himself in the foot by generally being a jerk or unlikeable.
2. Hustle at all times. All coaches notice and appreciate hustle, but not just the "for show" hustle.
3. Be on time for everything...most coaches notice.
4. Attend all voluntary practices & workouts
5. Have a buddy work the player out on some additional or special skill after practice for a few minutes...show some initiative to get better.
6. Be a good baserunner...get on the field
7. Have the player ask the coach where he needs to improve and what it takes to get on the field. Most coaches are impressed with a kid who will approach them in a thoughtful way.
8. Dress like a ballplayer and look alert and engaged in what's happening
9. Be prepared...when the opportunity comes, make the most of it....don't be the player who gets called on to pinch hit and looks at three strikes or goes into the game and makes a bonehead play in the field because he doesn't know the situation. Don't be surprised to get your chance...be ready.
