Definintely a lot of games on the schedule for this week, really too many to try to analyze. The games that I think coiuld end up being good are Asheville/Reynolds, Wilkes Central/Freedom and definintely Owen/McDowell. Wilkes Central, to the best of my memory, is still a pretty strong 2A team, I think they have potential to beat Freedom in Morganton. Freedom isn't exactly the offensive powerhouse. For example, the Lady Patriots have scored 95 points in two games while McDowell scored 85 in only one game. Freedom is doing a good job moving the ball around, but they don't have anybody that can really hit from the outside. Not sure how long they'll survive at that pace.

The Owen/McDowell game has the revenge factor written all over it for the Lady Titans, but the Lady Warhorses have one of the best post players in Western North Carolina, Corrine Groves. Reynoldsrocks23, since you have already seen Owen in action, what would be your take on the game? I also remember there being 2 other tall girls on their team last year, are they still there? Personally, I think we'll see McDowell lay on that aggressive press that was used on Mitchell, but I also think we may see some zone once in the halfcourt setting just to make sure we have more people inside to crash the boards. This game should be really fun on Saturday.

From what I saw from Owen, they do have a couple of big girls, one being Corrine Groves. We pressed them and they honestly handled it GREAT and actually scored off our press ALOT. I wish we had got out of the press earlier. They pass the ball well, and then get it to Corrine for the lay up or short jumper, and it really hurt us. When we didn't press them, they had a few more problems. I just think we fell in love with the press and didn't have a lot of success with it. Their half court game especially their outside game wasn't up to ours and that is why we beat them. I don't think they will really challenge McDowell, keep in mind we beat them up there, without our 2nd leading scorer (Worley). So I think McDowell will handle them when you factor in that McDowell is just better than ACR, they have the revenge factor, and they are playing at home. Really I see the Lady Titans winning by double digits.....15-20.

Fridays game between AC Reynolds and TC Roberson has been moved to Wednesday, December 15. Due to the Roberson football game to be played that night.

Good win for the Lady Spartans tonight. It was an emotional begining of the varsity contests as Karen Trivette was awarded several things from West Caldwell High school and Caldwell County Commishioners.

I realize it is a NW4A thread, but Karen Trivette is a great lady and deserves any an every award given to her. For all the accolades given for what West Caldwell's boys teams have accomplished, they have NEVER won a state championship in anything. Karens' girls teams have the only West Caldwell Team titles (2)..

    St. Stephen's vs Alexander Central

    St. Stephen’s 41
    Alexander Central 37

Free throws ended up being the difference in this game. If AC hits half of the free throws they missed and there were a lot, they win going away (editorial: they probably could have hit them if most of the players that were in the physical education conditioning class were not required to work out at with max weights earlier in the day. I bet that would not happen when baseball/softball season rolls around).
The offense struggled (and that is a nice way to put it) in a game of lineup changes and odd combinations of players. Tied at 9 after one, the Indians were up by 3 at half 22-19, and led by 6 at the end of three 32-26. There were moments that it looked like SSHS would finally blow it open in the third and fourth, but the Cougars led by Kenya Miller with 15 kept it close and were within 2 with just over a minute to play. The Indians hit their free throws when called up while the Cougars who had several attempts at the line late could not hit and St. Stephens’s held on for the 4 point victory.
For the Cougars, along with Miller’s 15 were led by Tekera Flowers with 8 and Emily Pierce with 6.
ACHS travels to West Wilkes Tuesday evening for their next contest.

    SSHS vs ACHS

Also want to commend the SSHS players and coaches; they played a tough man-to-man defense and were aggressive all night. They are not as big as they have been in the last few years, I don't think, so their lack of size may hurt them against teams with bigger inside players. Not sure how they will fare against the Hickory's and Fred T Foard's of the conference this year. But I think they have a solid team with some very good players.
