Strange things happen on draft day....I know from our experience last year. Teams will tell you one thing then do something else, players drop they weren't counting on dropping etc...deals are made last minute.

Madison has an excellent chance to go high in the upcoming draft....wish him the best no matter what decision he makes. He is in for a fun, hectic and frustrating day on June 7th.

    Good Luck Maddie

as great a prospect as bumgarner is imagine what josh hamilton must have been. #1 in the nation as both pitcher and outfielder. threw mid 90's of mound and was the best hitter in the draft. anyone on this board see him in high school?

    The List

How do you think they got classified on their list to start with, by the team's immediate need by position/prospect. Every team does not have the same list, while some might be very close and may have the same prospects on them, they may have them ranked differently based on the level of benefit they expect from each one... Then when their turn comes, they choose the highest one left on their list. For example comparing SS Jackson to LHP Bumgarner. If it is Team "A"s pick and they are blessed with shortstops, but lacking on young lefty pitchers who do you think is higher on their list? It should be Bumgarner, and vise versa.

...and lefty pitcher with a strong arm. There is not a team out there that is not lacking in this position.

But everybody is correct. There is no rule of thumb nor is their 100% agreement from one team to the next in their evaluations. You would be a poor man trying to wager who the top 20 picks will be. Some organizations like HS players and some absolutely refuse to draft them.

Some clubs will tell you they love a player, but when the time comes they take a "pass". If you ask 4 different scouts about a player you will get 4 different answers.

That's one of the reasons I love the baseball draft over the other sports. There are always a lot of surprises

Not in HS, but several times just after being drafted in the Appy League.
Honest to goodness, I thought I was watching the next Mickey Mantle in terms of talent and the way he connected with the fans. Not just 5 tools, but 5-plus tools. Unfortunately, I think that fan accessibility proved to be his undoing. Everytime I'd saw him, he would stay after games until the last autograph was signed.

Lists such as Perfect Game, Baseball America, MLBSB, etc.,etc.,etc., are based on TALENT and not any team's needs. There are team NEEDS at every level at every position. Each one of those lists will be different. The list is according to Best Overall Player done by each team. And yes, most have the same players but not in the same order according to their own evaluations. Some teams don't historically go for highschoolers and yes the Braves love them. You can't say a team would pass on Madison (or anyone else) when it is their turn to pick just because they don't have an immediate NEED if he is the next undrafted highest player name on their very long list or necessarily choose him either if he is several positions below their current pick.

Your pro scouts may be saying one thing to you, mine are saying something different - that's all.

I agree. Basketball and football drafts may be influenced by need, but not baseball. Signability is a much bigger issue than need for MLB clubs.
A HS player will be spending a minimum of 4 years in the minors in most cases, so how can can you predict need over that length of time in the era of free agency ? You can't.

Madison Bumbgarner because he is just not an awesome pitcher but he can hit the ball better than anyone in the NW4A conference
