Saw at stat from past weekend college game that made me scratch my head...

Player had 2 at bats and 3 hits???? Lookin at the play by play, player had a sac bunt on which the batter was credited with a hit and a sac, evidently beat the catcher's throw or no throw was attempted. Isn't it a sac only if the batter actually "sacrifices" by making an out to move/score a runner? In other words, it's either a hit or a sac?

That batter was 3 for 3, I believe. His sac attempt would be credited as a hit after he beat the throw to first.

I've heard of "padding" the stats but he's hitting 1.500! Was his dad keeping the books?

Proper scoring of a baseball game is often not achieved at the HS level for sure....it is in fact very complicated, particularly when something odd occurs (and that happens quite often actually). Most scorers are self taught and don't have a complete command of the scoring principles....I bought a book about proper scoring and was soon overwhelmed with how wide the gulf is between proper scoring and conventional scoring. Friendly scorers are the hitter's best friend and the pitcher's worst enemy....liberal interpretations usually benefit the batter. I believe the biggest miss is what qualifies for earned and unearned runs (I really struggle with that one). I occasionally see HS box scores with a save given to the last pitcher of the winning team who won a game by a score of 12-3...doesn't meet the criteria for a save.

It is always fun to read the variety of responses on TBR when someone poses a scoring question.....I certainly don't have a strong comprehension of all of the scoring nuances, but I do recognize many scoring errors when I see them.

I did scorekeeping for a promiment hs baseball team for years. Some of the biggest arguments were in the coaches office after the game on what was hits and what was errors. LOL I remember a certain hit I had put down that got changed to an error by the hs coach on a 2nd baseman, and the kid hadn't committed an error in 2 years. The reason? HE should have made that play. If it had been anyone else it would have been a hit. All subjective. Guess what. That kid is now the head coach at that school.
