This was started on the baseball boards so I moved it over here too. Go read their post on "dead periods" and 8 player workouts and post some of your opinions here. I would like to see baseball and softball coaches get together and change these rules. Personally I think they do more harm than good.

I am also against these "dead periods". One of the biggest problems that many high school head or assistant coaches also coach travel ball teams and with September being still a big month for travelball the coaches aren't suppose to play their teams during that time. This is ridiculous as this is a great time for the kids to play while the weather is some of the best of the year. The NCHSAA is very much out of touch with the kids wants and needs these days and I personally hope our new coaches association puts this problem at the top of their list. As long as it is voluntary the kids should be allowed to practice whenever possible. You have to remember not everyone likes the same thing. Some like one sport only and are not going to play another sport just because their sport has a whole month off

    I Agree

I am one of those that coach a HS and travel team The dead period last year and this (2005) is aug 1st. to sept 1st. I cannot take my team to a super worlds, or even the Nicole Bowman Memorial because of this rule. Some of my girls play other sports and some dont. We as coaches encourage them to play what they want.
I am going to contact Ms. Shannonhouse about it but she can only go by the rules. I hope after my talk with her she may try and change it to better reflect the reality on todays sports.

With try-outs starting Monday I just relized something. Now someone correct me if I'm wrong but August when school is not even in session for the first 2 weeks is still a dead poriod because of football try-outs. November is a dead period because of basketball try-outs and they can't even practice while out of school for Thanksgiving. why is it that there is nodead period in Feburary for Baseball and softball try-outs???
Don't get me wrong I hate all dead periods but if they have them for fall and winter sports why not for spring sports. If i were a baseball or softball coach I would be doing something to get this stuff changed.

Yes there is a 4 week period for other sports following or preceeding spring. I guess we have really haven't paid attention to it because we are in our great game.
