I've been involved in baseball both as a player and a coach for a long time, and have seen delays of all sorts. Things like no umpires, last minute downpour, snow, lightning, even umpires riding together and being involved in a minor collision (happened last night) on the way to the game. But last night I saw a first. My son plays second base for Piedmont and during last period at school starting getting stomach pains. Well wouldn't you know it, there seems to be a bug going around at school and he got it. Between last period and game-time threw up 4 or 5 times and when warming up before the game almost soiled his pants. Coaches asked him if he could play and he told them he'd try. Made it to the top of the 3rd and when the pitcher finished his warmups the catcher started to throw down and stopped, took off his mask, hollered at the coach while pointing at my kid. I looked to second and sure enough, there was my pride and joy, heaving all over the place behind the bag. Needless to say his night was over. Then there was at least a 10 minute delay while the coaches scooped sand into buckets to haul away and bring in fresh sand to cover itm up and rake everything out. He finally stabilized about 3 this morning and is fine now. I have to admit this is the first time I've seen a delay of this type. After the initial concern and looking back now it's kind of funny. Just thought I'd share the story.

    Jared

I am glad Jared is doing better. In the future, won't he have something to tell his kids.

Very good story, Blademan. Thanks for sharing. I agree, I have never seen that happen...well, that's not exactly true. I witnessed at another level a player heaving on the basepaths...but that was not due to the bug.

I'm glad your son is okay...looking forward to his future success.

    I guess so

Hate to hear about WS. Thought they had the goods to go a ways. You never know how the games will turn out though. Like us last night. We had 13 hits to their 6. The breaks all went against us and we made our mistakes at the most in-opportune times so they all bit us in the behind. Good luck to you guys in Legion. Are you doing Legion? Our first game is at home Monday vs. the North Meck guys.

Thanks Braves. He had a tremendous junior year. Hate to see him work all year and then not be able to go hard when it mattered most. It's weighing heavy on him too as he was close to the seniors and hated for it to end for them. Trying to say all the right things to him to pick him up but Hey, he's 17, he'll probably bounce back faster than I will!

The craziest one like that I've seen happened my sophomore year. We traveled to East Davidson. Our normal second baseman was in the bathroom all during warm ups but he said he would try to play. The backup second baseman took a ball off the nose and broke his nose during warmups. The starting second baseman last one inning before he had to come out of the game. We had to move the shortstop to second base, bring the centerfielder into short (hadn't played there in 3 years), and put another guy out in center field.

    Proud Moment

    Similar situation early this season.
The night before a tough game, my son got notice that the coaching staff from the college he would like to attend would be in the stands to watch him play. Over the previous five days, that dredded FLU bug devastated all members of our household, but Jr.
Guess what showed up in the second inning!
Grandpa asked me why Jr. was bent over with his hands on his knees between pitches. I knew instantly what was to come next.
Yep, you guessed it. There was Jr. "barfing" in CF.

Dispite his illness, Jr. stayed in the game, refused to come out.
He made several trips to the bathrooms between innings, and somehow stayed in the game.
He was very disappointed that he did not have one of his better days for the scouts. But hey, thats baseball.

Ok.....I've got a good one that doesn't include empting the contents of ones stomach.

When my son was a jr. in HS his team traveled to Davie County to play the War Eagles at Rich Park early in the season when the games start at 4:00. Along about the 5th inning while my son was warming up the pitcher, he commented to the plate ump as to the fact that the sun had dropped to a position where it made it difficult to see. The ump immediately haulted the game for about 15 minutes to allow the sun to drop below the trees, much to the dismay of Coach Herndon and the Davie County fans. I thought it was funny(of course). I guess the ump didn't want to be behind a catcher that couldn't see the ball.
Interestingly, the following year the same thing happened with a different ump. This time though, it was planned just to see if he(son) could pull it off again. You gotta love it.......
