Thanks, Pop for clarifying. Since the rule requires "coaching attire" on the field of play, then one possibly could assume that rule may be intended at least in part to have coaches (not parents, friends, etc. ) in the area of the dugout. But by letter of the rule, I understand what you are saying about anyone can actually be in the dugout according to the wishes of the head coach. Understood.
Again, it just seems (in my opinion) more "above board" to all parties involved for a coach to limit parents from being in the dugout. Again, that's just my perception & I certainly respect all opinions. Thanks.

Some umps enforce the rule, some do not. The rule is usually strictly enforced during playoffs.

    Change of subject

Most of the time they don't even know the rules. So therefore they can't enforce them. Nobody is perfect, I understand. But we've had a lot of problems with runners running down first base line and not being called out, when they should be.

A batter running to first base is supposed to run in foul territory (the running lane) to avoid interfering with a throw to first. However, if no interference actually occurs during the play then there can be no call. The only way interference can occur is if she is in fair territory while running to first and is struck by the thrown ball. When this happens, the ump will make the call or should face protest (with the rule book in hand) by the defense’s coach. A runner will NEVER be called out simply for running to first on the wrong side of the line. This is a very basic rule in softball and baseball.
