    Dirtbags 4...S. Florida Titans (18U)...1

    Titans....000 100 0.....1...6...3
    Dirtbags..000 220 x.....4...4...1

    Winning Pitcher: William Frazier (5IP, 4H, 8K, 2BB, 1R, 1ER)
    Save: Dylan Dickens (2IP, 2H, 2K, 1BB, 0R)

The Dirtbags opened their tournamant with a 9:00 game that was tight throughout. William Frazier (Charlotte Country Day 2011) showed complete command of 4 pitches and recorded 8K's and no walks thru five innings. The FLA pitcher held the 'Bags hitless thru three until George Carter (UNC commit) opened the 4th frame with a blast to center yielding a triple. A couple of infield tappers and an error by the catcher plated two runs. Switch-hitting Mikal Hill (USC commit) moved to the left side and ripped a 2-run HR to straightaway RF to make the lead 4-1. Playing in the Twins spring training facility, made his wood bat HR on a Major League dimensioned field even more satisfying. After a long half inning, Frazier gave up his only two walks to start the 6th inning and was relieved by Dylan Dickens (Person 2011). The submarining righty worked out of the jam nicely and then fought thru his own jam in the 7th to record the save, aided by a nice relay play from the warning track to nail a runner at the plate. Conner Andrus (RJ Reynolds 2011) called a super game and made all the plays behind the plate.

    Leading Hitters:

    Mikal Hill 1-3 HR, 2RBI
    George Carter 1-2, 3B
    Tyler Alberts 1-3, RBI

    Pokers......000 000 0.....0...2...1

    Winning Pitcher: Jason Creasey (5IP, 2H, 9K, 1BB, 0R)

The Dirtbags plated two runs in the first inning and that was more than enough for Jason Creasey (NC State commit) as he cruised thru the first three innings with a 90+ mph fastball. Back-to-back singles in the 4th inning were all he yielded and he continued to rack up the K's with a sharp breaking ball to compliment his early-inning power pitching. Mikal Hill (USC commit) was on base four times, going 3-3 and George Carter (UNC commit) knocked in two runs with a well-placed single to the backside in the 2-run first inning and a double to left center that carried well beyond the reach of the centerfielder giving chase.

    Leading hitters:

    Mikal Hill 3-3
    George Carter 2-4, 2B, 2RBI
    DC Arendas (N. Guilford 2012) 1-3, 2B, RBI
Seth Constable (USC commit) 1-4, 2B

    Sunday results

    Dirtbags....103 010 0.....5...7...1
    Pokers......000 000 0.....0...1...2

    Winning Pitcher: Ryan Gupton (7IP, 1R, 1H, 9K, 2BB, 1ER)

Ryan Gupton (East Carolina commit) was the story in the last game of pool play as he was two outs from a no-hitter when the #3 hitter stroked a sinking liner to the outfield, eluding the diving rightfielder by a couple of feet. He recorded 9 K's and was in command all the way. Seth Constable (USC commit) tripled of the base of the left field wall and Dustin Spruill (Chowan 2011) plated two early runs with a sharp single into left center.

    Game 4

    Shockers.....000 200 03.....5...4...0
    Dirtbags......110 000 00.....2...7...1

With a perfect 3-0 record in pool play and only two runs allowed, the Dirtbags earned a #3 seed in the round of sixteen, but lost the first game with an odd ending. Luis Paula started for the 'Bags and was cruising until the fourth when a walk and two hits resulted in two runs. Paula had 7 K's and 2 BB's to go with three hits in four innings, leaving the game tied 2-2. Dirtbag hitters were active early, but struggled late in the game as the clutch hit proved to be elusive. After seven innings the score was still tied and the tie-breaker called for each team to have a shot with the bases-loaded and one out in the book. That was when things went a little wacky. George Carter was strong in relief, striking out the side in the 5th inning and inducing some weak tapouts in the 6th. His sharp breaking ball was a very effective compliment to his high 80's FB, but during the tie-breaker, two successive curveballs broke sharply downward and the catcher couldn't block them. Both balls went to the screen and caromed wildly off the backstop post. The first one allowed one run in and the second plated two as the carom wound up being fielded by the third baseman near the third base coaches box. With the same scenario in the bottom of the 8th, the Dirtbags were not able to match the three runs scored by the Shockers in the top of the frame.
