    Randleman's McSwain Hurls Perfect Game
    McSwain's perfection a rare feat

As the game progressed Tuesday night, Randleman's Matt McSwain sat huddled in the corner of the dugout. He wasn't trying to be anti-social, he was just focusing extremely hard. The right-handed pitcher had a really good thing going -- a perfect game.

"They say not to talk about it because it's bad luck," McSwain said. "But you think about it. You know what you've got going. ... If you get nervous, that's when you mess up."

When the seventh and final inning finally arrived, McSwain didn't mess up. He struck out the side against Cedar Ridge, with the crowd standing and applauding. And then it was over, and the Tigers mobbed McSwain.

"I got speared by the first baseman," he said. "It was OK. ...It was great, just the feeling that I had a perfect game."

McSwain, a senior with a scholarship to Elon next season, struck out 14 batters, threw 90 pitches and only went to a full count twice.

Coach David Brown said McSwain's fast ball was just too good on Tuesday. Usually, Brown says, McSwain's curve ball is what sets him apart, making batters move away from the plate or making their knees buckle. McSwain said he used it as his strikeout pitch on Tuesday.

Brown said he checked with the N.C. High School Athletic Association and was told that there were only eight reported perfect games in North Carolina baseball, and McSwain's is thought to be just the third complete, seven-inning game.

And get this. McSwain's last start was a one-hitter and the hit was given up in the first inning, so he's actually thrown 13-straight innings of no-hit ball.
