The Perfect Game World Wood Bat Junior Division Tournament is being held at East Cobb this week. Here is a report from earlier today.

    On Deck O’s 16’s 5, Ann Arbor Braves 1

2B Wes Borden (South Meck ’05) laced 3 hits and knocked in 2 runs and pitcher Alex Martin (Providence ’04) worked 6 strong innings to pace the On Deck O’s 16’s to a 5-1 win over the Ann Arbor (Michigan) Braves. CF Jonathan Ratledge (Charlotte Country Day ’05) had an RBI double for the O’s, and DH Daniel Hill (Charlotte Christian '05) also had a run scoring hit. Matt Layman (South Meck '06) pitched the 7th for the O's. SS Zach Putnam (’05, Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, MI) had 2 hits and drove in Ann Arbor’s lone run.

The O's pool play schedule includes the Indiana Mustangs tomorrow, the East Cobb A's 17's Thursday, the Douglasville (GA) Bisons Friday, and the Austin (TX) Baseball Club on Saturday. 16 teams advance from the tournament's 40 team field to the championship round beginning Saturday afternoon.

DodgerBlues: Please continue to keep us informed with your reports for the On Deck 16 O's in East Cobb at the The Perfect Game World Wood Bat Junior Division Tournament. I hear that Ben Buchanan(East Meck '04) will be pitching for the 16 O's on Wednesday which hopefully could assure another win for the 16 O's?!?

I will Southloop, until I leave for Atlanta Friday morning. After that (or before if you want), just go to www.PerfectGame.org and follow the links to the tournament reports. My report was pulled from their report (only I made a couple corrections).

Yes, thanks, DodgerBlues. I followed the On Deck 18 O's last week under the Perfect Game website but knew that you could give the reporting on the On Deck 16 O's in East Cobb a more personal touch than that on the Perfect Game website. Drive safely to Atlanta the end of this week.

    Indiana Mustangs 3, On Deck O's 16s 2

I just got word that the O's lost a heartbreaker to the Indiana Mustangs today, 3-2. Here's the report I got.

Ben Buchanon (East Meck '04) held the Indiana team scoreless for his 5 innings pitched. Wes Waddell (Olympic '05) pitched a scoreless 6th and then the disastrous bottom of the 7th came.

With one out, a Mustang batter walked to start the rally after his foul pop-up was dropped. The next two Mustangs singled, loading the bases. The next Mustang doubled over the center fielder's head, scoring 2 and having the potential winning run gunned down on a fine relay throw to the plate by ss Greg Miclat (Robinson '05). However, the winning run scored when the next hitter's fly ball was misplayed in left field for the second error of the inning.

It doesn't get easier tomorrow. The O's play the East Cobb A's 17s at 7:40 tomorrow night.

Because thunderstorms washed out 8 games Wednesday late afternoon and evening, the schedule has been moved back some. The O's game against the East Cobb A's 17s will now be at 9:00 Friday morning, and they will have another game at 2:00 Friday afternoon against the Douglasvile (GA) Bisons. The O's will not play tomorrow.

Starting pitchers have not been announced. Likely starters for Friday's games are Brendan Van Popering (Charlotte Catholic '05) and Thomas Hovis (Olympic '05), but Antonio Cousart (Myers Park '05), Kyle Josey (Butler '04) or Jonathon Ratledge (Charlotte Country Day '05) could get a start. I suspect Matt Layman (South Meck '06), who closed Tuesday, will get the start in the 8:00 a.m. Saturday game. With Cody Drake (Myers Park '05) and Jeremy Mathis (Myers Park '05) also available, the O's have plenty of options on the mound.

No other NC based teams are there, but I noticed in the write-up that the Knoxville Yard team (which is the same squad that did well in the Senior Wood Bat Championship last week) has at least 2 NC players, Alex Sink (Ragsdale '04) and Travis High (Wesleyan Christian). See the write-up below from the WWBA web site:

    Knoxville Yard 6, Bama Bombers 04’s 3

The Knoxville Yard, with virtually the same roster that went into the medal round of the WWBA Senior Division championships the previous week as the #4 overall seed, opened the Junior Division with a 6-3 win over the Bama Bombers ‘04’s. The Yard benefited from a balanced offensive attack. The top 2 hitters in the lineup, 2B Alex Sink (’04, Ragsdale HS, Jamestown, NC) and SS Cale Iorg (’04, Karns HS, Knoxville, TN) each reached 3 times on 2 singles and a walk. 1B Travis High (Wesleyan Christian Academy, Kernersville, NC) had a double and single and 2 Rbi’s. RHP Dontavious McDowell (’04, The Tucker School, Atlanta) got the win with 3 innings of 1-hit, 7 strikeout relief. The Bombers scored 3 runs early with the help of Knoxville walks. RF Chris Wiley (’05, Hartselle HS, AL) had 3 singles for the Bombers but was stranded on base twice and thrown out at the plate the other time.
